Fund develops Vietnamese language and culture overseas

VNS

The Community Support Fund for Overseas Vietnamese has been operating since 2003. Vice President Truong My Hoa, president of the fund’s sponsorship council, spoke to The Gioi and Viet Nam (World and Viet Nam) newspaper about its upcoming projects.

How successful were last year’s activities?

The fund was set up in 2003 to support overseas Vietnamese and further develop Vietnamese culture around the world.

Last year, the fund organised 16 different projects worth VND2.7 billion that include seven programmes designed to keep Vietnamese language alive in Laos, Cambodia, the Czech Republic and the US; three international exchanges; two investment programmes in Viet Nam; and four information and cultural assistance projects for Viet kieu communities in Russia, France and the US.

Our role is expanding every year as we organise more activities with overseas Vietnamese in many countries.

In our first year, we sent a group to South Korea and Taiwan to find out what we could do to assist Vietnamese communities in those countries and form a partnership with the Overseas Korean Agency.

We were also successful financially. In 2006, the fund received 300 per cent more capital for our programmes than we originally budgeted.

How important are the fund’s projects for Vietnamese communities? What are some of the challenges your organisation faces?

Our projects reflect how the Communist Party and State care about Overseas Vietnamese in terms of their economic and cultural development.

The most important task for us is to raise awareness of our organisation and why residents of Viet Nam should care about overseas Vietnamese communities. We believe by doing this, more people will support us financially nationally and abroad.

We hope overseas Vietnamese communities will do their part, too, by contributing to the fund so we can do even more in the future.

What plans does the fund have for 2007?

We are hoping to implement new programmes, on top of our current projects. We would like to organise a gathering of overseas Vietnamese students in Europe and host a Vietnamese business conference in Eastern Europe. We would also like to organise arts and cultural performances in Northern Europe, South Korea and Taiwan. These activities would be a good opportunity for us to raise funds for the organisation.

The sponsorship council is in the planning stages of an awareness campaign via Viet Nam Television and the Voice of Viet Nam. The council wants to encourage overseas Vietnamese communities and the Viet Nam Aviation Corporation to sponsor the fund’s major projects.

I hope Vietnamese people in both Viet Nam and abroad help each other remember their roots and become closer thanks to the fund’s programming.

Yes, it is important for people
to maintain their root and
heritage, but from my observation,
it is a loosing battle. I found
that after 3rd or 4th generations
or so, people hardly know anything
about where they came from, LOL.

Therefore, I don't think should
used such a normal adaptation and
evolution against anyone.

Correction for last paragraph:
Therefore, I don't think we should
