Cambodian ruling party's members surpass 5 million: report
The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) now has over five million members, almost one third of the kingdom's total population, the Commercial Daily on Friday quoted CPP officials as saying.
Before and during the registration of voters for the ongoing Commune Councils Elections, some people gave up their original political affiliation out of disappointment of these parties' performance and then turned to be CPP members for they were confident of the party's future, thus chalking up a major increase of the CPP's force, officials were quoted as saying.
"Reputation is the key word. The CPP will stay with the people forever and will never relinquish them," a local CPP official told the paper.
According to the National Election Committee, in December 2006, there were 11,764 people joining the CPP, most of them young people.
Analysts have predicted that the CPP will achieve landslide victory in the elections, which are preparation for the general election in 2008.
The CPP has been ruling party since the kingdom was established in 1993.
It has over 20,000 members in 1989, over three million in 1993, and 4.1 million in 2006, statistics said.
