A source from the Khmer Kampuchea-Krom Federation worldwide (KKF) indicated that a number of Khmer Krom people stood up and demonstrated against the Vietnamese authority after their lands were confiscated by the Vietnamese.
Monk Thach Binh, Director of the KKF in Cambodia, indicated that the demonstration against the land confiscation led to the arrest of 2 Khmer Krom in retaliation [by the Vietnamese authority].
In a phone interview, Vinh Ba, the demonstration leader declared that about 30 Khmer Krom people have gathered from different districts from Khleang Province (Soc Trang in Vietnamese) and traveled to the office of the South Vietnamese government headquarters to ask for his help in resolving this issue.
Vinh Ba said: “We demand back our rice fields, our orchard fields, our lands confiscated to build roads, our lands confiscated and turned into animal farms. If we stop [demonstrating], they are perpetrating more [land confiscation], they are now taking [our lands] to plant sugar canes also… Now, they don’t let us in [the government office], they don’t accept [our petition], but we are waiting near the gate, under the scorching sun. We don’t know when we will be admitted in.”
Vinh Ba added that several demands have already been made, however, there is no resolution to these demands, therefore, the demands are being pursued, even if they are facing road blocks preventing them to travel to make their demands.
Vinh Ba said: “We are scared, but we must endure, these are our properties and they will not compensate for them, we will endure the wait. There are police officers around where we are, if we step to go somewhere, they would follow us. For me, in the past, traveling from Prek Russei to come here takes about 3 hours, but now, it takes about 2 to 3 days because I had to take detours to go through 2 or 3 other provinces … we have to sneak in. It’s only when they shoot and kill us that we will stop, as long as we live, we are pursuing our claims, their compensation is too low … Khmer people only have their rice fields to feed themselves, if they lose them, they have to ask for them back.”
During the current demand, the same source indicated that 2 persons were arrested one day before the start of the travel out of the village. Monk May Vinh Ho, the representative of Khmer monks from Kampuchea Krom, indicated that the Vietnamese authority had accused the demonstrators of causing disturbances to the society.
Recently, several successive demonstrations were held by Khmer Kampuchea Krom which led to the arrest of Khmer Kampuchea Krom people and monks. The demonstrations were held to demand freedom, respect of religion, demand back lands confiscated by the Vietnamese authority.
