Peace Corps volunteers in Cambodia

2/4/2007

The first group of 30 Peace Corps volunteers ever serving in Cambodia on Saturday spent their first full day in Phnom Penh, before going to rural areas to teach English.

They arrived here on Friday evening and will soon study Khmer language and Cambodian culture for a few months before their formal mission starts in April, said a statement from the U.S. Embassy.

The volunteers departed from San Francisco, the United States, on Wednesday and will teach English at the upper secondary level and support teachers in Cambodian provinces and districts to improve their English language and teaching skills, said the embassy.

Except for classroom teaching, the volunteers will also collaborate with community groups and individuals to develop sustainable community activities to enhance the quality of life for Cambodians in the communities where they serve, it added.

Cambodia is the 139th country to partner with the Peace Corps, which has about 7,500 volunteers.

Hmm ... I wounder how long it will
take for the rural people to learn
English? It sounds rather fishy here.
