Thailand to legalize over 40,000 Cambodian laborers

The Thai government will grant two-year work permission for about 48,000 Cambodian laborers currently working illegally in Thailand, a local media reported on Friday.

The Thai authorities will provide certificates for these Cambodian laborers in accordance with a memorandum of understanding signed by both labor ministers in Phuket on Feb. 5, the Raksmey Kampuchea quoted Seng Sakda, director general of labor department of Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training as saying.

The accord stipulates that Thailand will carry out cooperation with Cambodia to use its laborers in the Thai territory, the official said.

According to the figures from the Thai authorities, there are about 180,000 Cambodian laborers working in Thailand, only some 100,000 of them with official work permission, he added.
