The number of tourists visiting Cambodia jumped nearly 20 per cent to 1.7 million in 2006, the Ministry of Tourism said in its Tourism Statistics Annual Report released Wednesday.
Tourism Minister Lay Prohas the increase was due to growing international awareness of the nation's rich cultural, historical and natural legacies.
South Koreans made up the largest group of visitors with 285,353, followed by Japan with 158,353 and the US with 123,847.
European visitors comprised 18.48 percent of the total, with the UK, France and Germany the leading European countries. Around 40,000 Germans visited Cambodia in 2006.
The major destinations for tourists were the capital Phnom Penh, and the northern gateway to the Angkor Wat temple complex, Siem Reap.
