150 Cambodians start march to demand more freedom of expression

March 01, 2007

About 150 people led by activists and Buddhist monks on Wednesday started a two-week march to demand more freedom of expression.

More people were expected to join the 230-kilometer march from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap province, home of the Angkor Wat temple complex, which is an ancient symbol of the Cambodian nation, said a statement from the organizers, who call themselves the Alliance for Freedom of Expression in Cambodia.

The door for exercising freedom is just narrowly open due to government restrictions, and it is necessary to have it open wider for all the people, said Kem Sokha, leader of the march.

The marchers plan to stop at villages along the way and hold forums to discuss human rights issues with residents, the statement said, adding that they are expected to arrive at Angkor Wat on March 15.

Fight for RIGHTS and FREEDOMS by marching? ,it will never work in CAMBODIA. Don't waste your time doing it. Taking up arms and reVOLT may do.

to take out the monks from politic.
They should be allowed to scam the
public. The rest, we don't care. We
just ignore their dellusion.

HUN SEN LOVE THIS MARCH FREE SPEECH, IT IS TOTALLY USELESS IT WILL HELP HUN SEN GOVERNMENT LOOK MORE DEMOCRATIC AND AT THE SAME TIME IT WILL NOT DO A DAMN THING TO HIM, HE KNOWS THAT! HE'S ONLY AFRAID OF VIOLENCE AND PEOPLE REVOLUTION THAT WOULD DEFINITELY UN STABILIZE HIS GOVERNMENT AND HIS CROOK ENTOURAGES. SO PEOPLE TAKE UP ARMS AND FIGHT ... THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO UPROOT HIM ONCE FOR ALL !!!
