Chhouk Rin, the former Khmer Rouge commander convicted of killing three Western backpackers and 13 Cambodians in 1994, was taken from Prey Sar prison to a Phnom Penh hospital for the treatment of AIDS-related illnesses, a prison official said Saturday.
Chhouk Rin spent about an hour at the Russian Hospital before returning to prison, Prey Sar Warden Mong Kim Heng said. He was inspected by the agency Doctors Without Borders, the warden said.
"He carries the AIDS virus," Mong Kim Heng said, adding that doctors had treated him for some symptoms but had not given him "delay medication."
Earlier this month, Chhouk Rin appealed to Western aid agencies for medication, and his wife said he was suffering from illnesses related to AIDS.
