Cambodia PM stresses importance of education for national development

Cambodia will try to develop human resources in order to improve economic efficiency, which is an important factor for poverty reduction, said Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday.

"The Royal Government has adopted the strengthening and improving of human capacity building as the top priority in order to respond to all challenges. Notably the government has given the highest priority in the education development and reform by promoting the basic education, and the quality of education in the national economic development framework," said Hun Sen.

He made the remarks while addressing the inauguration ceremony of Samdech Hun Sen and Lok ChumTeav's Cultural Center Building and conferring certificates to graduated students at the National Institute of Education.

For the last several years, the government has paid particular attention to the education sector, especially to training and educating of teachers, developing human resources, ensuring to improve skills in responding to the labor market in the region and in the world, said Hun Sen.

"Both public and private human resource development institutions have been making significant progress and the numbers of graduated students increased noticeably every year," he said.

Meanwhile, the current era of information technology requires change in the education sector and training system, especially improvement of the quality of education and training, he said.

"The education system without quality not only wastes the budget, time and destroy the future of the students, but also weakens the economic competitiveness of the country," he added.

In his speech, Hun Sen also called for the mobilization of all fund sources from the government, the private sector, the development partners, the students' parents and many other donors to invest in education.

During the past dozen of years, primary and college education in Cambodia has been marred by financial shortage, as 35 percent of its population still lives in poverty.
