Investigations, reports and articles on the society printed on quality glossy paper, that’s the challenge of a new general information magazine named South Eastern Globe. With about 100-page long, the English-language magazine is aimed at the general public: students, professionals, retired people, English-speaking Cambodians, and expatriates. “We don’t know if the market is ready,” said Tassilo Binzer, the magazine editor. “We want to propose an alternative product to the daily newspaper, using an international magazine standard. A serious news magazine which addresses all sort of topics.” Not just International standard, the price is also one, at $4 each. The investors conducted a market research and contacted potential companies which are interested in partnering with the magazine – airline companies and hotels.

With a startup investment of $100,000, the Globe counts on its self-financing through sales and advertisements. “We must create the demand as well as establishing our distribution network. The first number will be printed at 10,000 copies. It will be distributed free in libraries and universities, and they will also be sold in hotels, restaurants and airports,” Tassilo Binzer added. The christening number will include an investigation of the Internet Service Providers in Cambodia, the magazine promises to reveal surprises on this topic. It will also report a total immersion inside the inner working of the Apsara TV channel, and it could also include a report on pirates in the China Sea.

The magazine will bear the label: “made in Cambodia.” It will not be printed in Vietnam or in Thailand where the cost is cheaper and the printers more competent. “We want our magazine to grow with the country. It was not easy finding a good printing house, but we found one. Cambodia in full development, and that’s why we are betting on a quality product. At least, it must be 100% made in Cambodia,” Tassilo Binzer said. The investment is risky, but the impetus of the brand new magazine team seems to be on par with its ambition. South Eastern Globe launching day is today.
