Cambodian Prince Ranariddh vows to continue his political life
Cambodian Prince Norodom Ranariddh pledged to continue his political life, after the local court on Tuesday sentenced him in absentia to 18 months in jail, local media said on Thursday.
"I will continue my political life to protect the Cambodian people and benefit the country," local radio quoted him as saying from overseas.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced him to 18 months of imprisonment, with 150,000 U.S. dollars of compensation for the co- ruling Funcinpec Party, for breach of trust over pocketing the 3.6 million U.S. dollars from selling the party's old headquarters and then putting the land of its new headquarters under his own title.
The verdict would prevent Ranariddh from running for public office in Cambodia unless he serves at least two-thirds of his jail term or receives a pardon from King Norodom Sihamoni, his half brother.
Meanwhile, Muth Chantha, spokesman for the prince's Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP), said that the court was biased and politically motivated and wanted to terminate the prince's political life.
"But NRP is still firm and tries to work hard for the ongoing commune councils election," he added.
In addition, Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Thursday that the government had no rights to put pressure over the court and NRP could still be led by its members even without the leadership of Ranariddh.
"He knew he was guilty of corruption and requested me via many channels to coordinate to help him before the trial started. However, when I helped to coordinate, they said I put my hands in their internal affairs," he said.
"Whatever happened, they accused me of having political motivation," he added.
Ranariddh started to preside Funcinpec in 1992 and was ousted as president in October 2006, for neglecting party affairs and being unable to cooperate with Hun Sen. He then turned to establish NRP, whose members are currently joining the commune councils election.
The prince became President of the National Assembly in 1998, re-appointed in 2003, but resigned in March 2006 to protest against the political steps adopted by the ruling Cambodian People 's Party.
In 1993, he became First Prime Minister of the first ever government of the kingdom, but lost his power during a military coup in 1997.
