Pailin police denied yesterday the information published by the Kampuchea Thmei daily newspaper according to which, Khieu Samphan, the former KR head of state would have sold recently his house located close to the border with Thailand so that he can move to Phnom Penh.
“That house, he sold it for 100,000 Thai baths (~$3,000) almost 10 years ago to people from Phnom Penh whom he knows. Since then, the house is closed and only a keeper stays there,” said Tha Thea, the deputy commissioner of the Pailin municipality. According to Sam Ouk Pov, the Cultural bureau chief of this former Khmer Rouge stronghold, the 80-square-meter house was the occasional home of Y Chhean – the current Pailin governor – during the war. Y Chhean allegedly gave it to Khieu Samphan following the KR surrender. The former Head of State of the Pol Pot regime, currently lives in the village of O’Ta Praing, not too far from Phnom Yat.
