A group of villagers from Bos Ta Phang village, Trapeang Kranhoung commune, Tram Kak district, Takeo province, reported their fear because they claim that they saw a group of Vietnamese soldiers, dressed in Vietnamese uniforms, moving inside a forest close to their village.

The villagers claimed that on 16 March, the same day the commune election campaign started, they saw a group of Vietnamese soldiers transported by one large truck, a medics truck, and another truck completely covered by tarp.

The villagers are concerned about the presence of the Vietnamese troop: “The Viet soldiers came to Ta Phal pagoda. They came in three vehicles, although I only saw the soldiers in one truck only, the other truck was completely covered with a tarp. I cannot say anything about that truck because it was completely covered, I cannot see inside it. In fact, I saw … two trucks, one was carrying the soldiers, one was completely covered, and another medics truck. But, when I asked, they said that they are soldiers coming to remove bodies. I was not pleased, why did they come to dig for bodies right before the election … why did they come during the election campaign like that.”

Srey Ben, the Takeo provincial governor, declined to comment on the claim made by the villagers about the presence of Vietnamese troop inside the territory of his province. He told RFA reporters to go look on the spot by themselves. “There’s something? You go look to see, I don’t know…”

Takeo army officers admitted the presence of Vietnamese troop inside the Cambodian territory.

Say Sarun, the commander of the army division for the Takeo military zone, said on Monday afternoon that about 20 unarmed Vietnamese soldiers are searching for the remaining of missing soldiers [inside Cambodia], the search team is accompanied by 20 Cambodian soldiers to protect them.

Say Sarun said that the villagers should not be afraid because the Viet troop will return back to their country on 17 March, and they will take with the remaining of 6 Viet soldiers died during the [invasion] war [in the 80s].

Say Sarun said: “… This is the application of the convention established by the 2 government to search for Viet soldiers who died in the 70s. There are 6 remains of these soldiers. They will return back to their country on the 17. The 20 are part of a search team, they are not armed. There are 20 of our soldiers who provide them their protection because they came bare handed…”
