Man's death after standoff was suicide, autopsy shows

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A man whose body was found in his basement after a 30-hour standoff with police likely killed himself after wounding his wife and killing his grown son, according to preliminary autopsy results.

Thach Ros, 62, exchanged gunfire with police late Sunday before being found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head. Onondaga County medical examiners told police Monday it appeared the fatal bullet probably came from Ros' own weapon and not police gunfire. The bullet had not been recovered Monday.

Ros' son, Sophin "Peter" Ros, 33, was shot twice in the head, once in the abdomen and once in the arm, police said. Thach Ros' wife, Sopheap Kim Ros, 52, remained hospitalized Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The standoff began about 4 p.m. Saturday after Ros shot his wife outside their home and then barricaded himself inside. Over the next day, officers evacuated neighbors and fired more than 80 canisters of tear gas into Ros' house.

"We've never had to deploy this many before," Sgt. Tom Connellan said. "It was certainly enough to have driven out the typical person."

Investigators learned Ros had military training as a soldier in Cambodia, Police Chief Gary Miguel said.

"He's over 60, so we're talking about the Vietnam era," Miguel said. "You have to think about what type of training he has, what is his thought process about life. Police in his country are very different than in this country."

A SWAT team stormed the house at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. When officers entered, Ros fired one shot and police responded with a burst of gunfire. Officers found Ros' body in the basement.

Police said the conflict apparently started because Ros' son refused to take part in an arranged marriage to a cousin and married someone else. His new wife, Chanmakara, and Ros' two other children, a 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, escaped from the house by climbing onto a porch roof.

THACH ROS BELIEVED ON ONE THEORY OF CONFUCIOUS PRINCIPLES:

I GIVE YOUR LIFE SO I CAN TAKE IT BACK.
