15 prisoners escape in prison break in Cambodia

2007-04-02

Fifteen prisoners in Stung Treng provincial prison escaped on Sunday afternoon, local media reported on Monday.

The inmates attacked visiting guards, who came into the cell to provide them with water and urinal pots, said English newspaper the Cambodia Daily.

They escaped as the guards decided not to fire on them, prison director La Monorith said, adding that three of the inmates were captured as they ran off into nearby forests.

"We are cooperating with the police and military police to look for them, but it's difficult because there is jungle and thick forest 100 meters from the prison," he said.

Provincial police, military police and military sub-operation force are hunting down the remaining escapees, according to the Koh Santepheap.

The 12 were serving five-to-ten-year prison terms for crimes such as drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery.

Damn, the guards need to know their
job here. You can't let them
(criminals) go to civilization and
victimize innocent people. You job
will be to fire a warning shot
once, and if they don't freeze, you
have the duty to drop them at all
cost. Get it? We must protect
innocent people from these
criminals.
