TOKYO: A crew member was missing after two freighters collided and one of them sank early Saturday off the coast of Wakayama in southwestern Japan, the Japan Coast Guard said.
The two freighters collided early Saturday morning about 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles) off Esuzaki, Wakayama, local coast guard official Takashi Nishikawa said.
Rescuers were searching for one of the four Japanese seamen aboard the 313-ton No.7 Eifukumaru, which sank after colliding with the 1,208-ton Cambodia-registered Yinhe No.1, Nishikawa said.
All of the 10 Chinese crew members aboard the Yinhe No.1 were found safe, he said. The Yinhe No.1 was on its way to a port in central Japan from Shanghai, according to the official.
Officials were investigating why the two ships collided, he said.
