Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged the rubber sector to expand the country’s area under rubber cultivation from 520,000 at present to 1 million hectares by 2015.
Rubber currently contributes over US$1 billion to the national export turnover, thus it is extremely important to step up development of the industry, the PM said.
PM Dung was speaking at a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday to inaugurate the Vietnam Rubber Group (VRG), which was transformed from the Vietnam Rubber Corporation.
He stressed VRG would play a key role in the process of realizing the target with its task of cultivating an additional 200,000ha and encouraging non-members to grow the remaining area.
VRG is currently managing over 220,000ha of rubber, of which 180,000ha yields an average 1.8 tons per hectare, the highest among rubber growing countries in the world.
So far, the sector achieved a total revenue of VND12.9 trillion ($804.5 million) and earned VND4.1 trillion ($255.7 million) profit last year.
It is planning to grow 100,000ha of rubber tree in Laos and another 100,000ha in Cambodia.

Who dare to attack Khmer Buddhist monk, either they are from mainland Kampuchea or from Kampuchea Krom? Not real khmer people even among the police forces. Cambodia has around 14 000 000. Among this number how many millions of vietnamese? Some estimate minimum of 5 000 000. I would rather say 8 000 000. This is the only way to new colonization and it will work at long term if we don't move our ass.
