Cambodian journalist cries foul over police fish sauce attack

Phnom Penh - A Cambodian journalist appealed to human rights campaigners for help Wednesday in accusing a senior police officer of assaulting him with a dish of fish sauce in a restaurant. San Bun Thoeun, a reporter with mass-circulation gossip magazine Angkor Thom, claimed deputy chief of Phnom Penh judicial police Moung Kim launched his attack with a dish of the pungent sauce after seeing a recent article concerning his wife, glamorous singing star Meng Keo Pich Chenda.

The journalist called the assault an infringement of his rights and demanded an apology, adding he was taking the matter to prominent local human rights group Licadho and considering court action if he did not receive an apology.

"I am very upset. This is not about money, this is about my honour. There were a lot of people in the restaurant who saw and heard this insult against me," Thoeun said by telephone.

A representative for the Cambodian Club of Journalists said the group was still awaiting a request to intervene in the escalating furore, which has received widespread coverage in local media.

Kim was unavailable for comment.

Last year Paris-based journalism watchdog Reporters Sans Frontiers reported a number of attacks on Cambodian journalists, but this was believed to be the first involving a condiment.

Local newspaper Cambodia Daily quoted Information Minister Khieu Kanharith as saying that if the fish sauce allegation was true and Kim had a legitimate complaint about a story, he should use more conventional avenues to display his displeasure, such as requesting a correction.

Hey, if anyone don't like srok
Khmer, get the hell out, period.
We are not France, Spain, US, UK,
... or AU. Don't tell us about
your stupid EU constitution and
law shits. When you're in srok
Khmer, you will be subjected to
khmer laws and code of conduct of
the community. Thus, I reccommend
that you do some research first
before you interact with our
people.

I guess throwing some fish sauce at anyone is appropriate. It is our LAW to act childish, hainus in all kind of forms. Journalists are bad because they find and tell the truth to citizens. I bet the guys on here that like to support these HAINUS acts are not even living in Cambodia. Feels great to live abroad and protected under their national laws. Unlike in Cambodia, your negitative remarks would have landed you with a bullet, robbed, wife gets raped, siblings gets killed, or your throat slit. But then again you live abroad so you feel safe. These journalist helps keep the Government power in check. But then your view 4:07pm and the other haters on here are appropiate because you get to live somewhere that is safe. Dumb Fuck!

As the citizen of the world, We are all should support 3:59PM. To make the community feel safe we need to recruit the people with good character to join the police force.

The journalists are just doing their excellent jobs in reporting, nothing wrong with them.

Next time before you say something...use your head a little bid.

3:59PM, YOU are the Hero.
Let the dickhead bark!

Wrong, wrong, wrong, and this is
no wild wild west country. If you
want to live here you must respect
our code of conduct and hierarchy.
You can't just intrude on our
respected officer's private life
without permission and expected
bussiness as usual. Our officer
and family does have the right
to privacy,... . The journalist is
an idiot who doesn't know what
country he's in. They must banned
him and set a good example of
others.

So If I tell the truth that in the mid-90s when she first came out to a western country there was resturant owner who wanted to screw her so badly; she accepted the deal $1000. It was done overnight. It was a lot of money for her at the time. She was not famous and rich yet at the time.

Go tell that Funcinpec police general Muong Khim about it and I am waiting for the acid on me ass.

1000 $ in the mid-90s ? well the price did not change so much...from 500 $ to 1000 $ you still can get one of these famous singers or movie stars to open the legs for you the whole night....when you are hungry [for money], you don't look what the hot dog looks like....
