PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Cambodia's former king Norodom Sihanouk, who is battling cancer, returned home Sunday after spending seven months in China for medical treatment.
The 84-year-old, who left for Beijing last September, appeared healthy as he walked off his plane at Phnom Penh International Airport and waved to about 200 onlookers.
King Norodom Sihamoni, who became the Cambodian monarch in October 2004 after Sihanouk abdicated because of his ill health, greeted his father and mother, former Queen Monineath, at the airplane door.
The former king was also greeted by top government officials including Prime Minister Hun Sen and leaders from Cambodia's main political parties.
Sihanouk has suffered from a number of ailments, including cancer, diabetes and hypertension.
Despite giving up his role as monarch, he remains a powerful figure in Cambodia.
But Sihanouk, who often uses messages to weigh in on matters affecting Cambodia, said in a statement posted on his website from Beijing earlier in March that he was withdrawing from public life and politics.

unlike most "kon khmer" i respect Sihanonouk and his wisdom. He has done all there is possible in his life for his people while others, well others, they just sat still and do nothing because they're afraid of being blame.
