Groups Condemn Monk Scuffle

Heng Reaksmey, VOA Khmer
Original report from Phnom Penh
21/04/2007

The Khmer Kampuchea Krom Association and the Sam Rainsy Party Saturday condemned the violence that ensued between two groups of monks in protests Friday.

Separate press releases said the clashes between Kampuchea Krom monks and another group of Cambodian monks should be considered an abuse of religious freedom.

The two groups clashed outside Wat Ounalom Friday morning, the Cambodia Daily reported Saturday.

The Kampuchea Krom monks had been protesting the alleged rights abuses of fellow monks and others in Vietnam by authorities there.

"Using violence the wrong way against human rights and the expression of opinion is a violation on human rights," Sam Rainsy Party Secretary-General Mu Sochua said. "More seriously, using force to destroy what is culture, the religion of the Khmer people, Buddhism. SRP condemns this action."

I could not believe. No idea. thanks.

In Cambodia, violence is also rooted in the most-calm-nonviolent human beings-monks. How can the leaders claim that Cambodia is in peace? leaders produce verbal violence everyday.

CCHR calls for investigation in the violent crackdown on peaceful Khmer Krom Monks' protest

Phnom Penh, April 22, 2007

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) condemns the violence and suppression of peaceful protest of Khmer Krom Monks on April 20, 2007 . Again the Cambodian Government resort to its usual way of suppression and intimidation. CCHR is saddened to see yet again another dirty trick of the Government to use thugs in disguise to disperse otherwise peaceful protest.

On the morning of Friday April 20th, 2007 , about 70 monks protested outside the Vietnamese Embassy wanting to hand over a petition demanding for the rights of the indigenous people, the Khmer Krom of the southern Vietnam region. At the same time, a group of people who appear to be monks confronted the protesters with violence. A few monks were hurt in the scuffle. According to witnesses, one Khmer Krom monk got an injury to the head by a plain clothes man in front of a troop of armed police. No one is brought to justice for the crime.

Such peaceful protest is guaranteed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Cambodian Constitution. Yet once again the Cambodian authorities resort to the use of excessive forces of Military Police and others arm forces in suppressing the very same people they are paid to protect.

CCHR believes that the people who resort to use violence are neither monks nor good citizens. They are thugs who need to be brought to justice. We have seen often peaceful protests are broken up in the same manor many times before. We calls upon the government to investigate and punish those responsible, including the police that allow and encourage such violence to happen in front of their eyes. We also call upon the Cambodian Government to change its attitude of intolerance to tolerance and suppression to democracy and the respect of human rights.
