Kem Sokha announced new party’s name: Human Rights Party

12 April 2007
Kampuchea Thmei newspaper
Translated from Khmer by Socheata

After sending his application to the Ministry of Interior (MoI) to form a new political party, Kem Sokha, the former president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR), decided to organize a reception which was held on 11 April evening, at the CCHR office, The goals of the reception were to announce to all CCHR members his resignation from the NGO and to celebrate the Cambodian New Year.

Kem Sokha told Kampuchea Thmei that whatever he announced earlier about the formation of the new party, has now all been accomplished, and the application for the formation of the party had been sent to the MoI on 10 April 2007.

Kem Sokha said that before he even decided on what to name his party, some have already predicted the new party’s name even before he himself had made any decision. But, there is no longer any need to speculate or predict the name of this new party which is now named “Human Rights Party”.

Khieu Sopheak, MoI spokesman, said that the ministry already received the application for the new party from Kem Sokha, and that the application had been sent by Sar Kheng, the Minister of Interior, to the appropriate department for review before a reply will be given.

Khieu Sopheak said that it is the ministry policy to provide an answer only 15 days after the application has been received. Nevertheless, according to the Cambodian Constitution, any individual has the right to form a political party or NGO, as long as that party or NGO fulfilled all the requirements stipulated by the law.

Kem Sokha said that even thought the party’s name has been revealed from now already, he has not yet put any thought into creating an alliance with any political parties, as the new party does not have a proper structure yet. Kem Sokha said the funds to support the formation of the new party were not provided by any country, but that they were provided by Cambodian friends and people overseas. According to the law pertaining to the formation of a political party, no foreign countries can provide funds, as it is against the law [in Cambodia].

Kem Sokha said that according to his party’s political directive, the party president can only hold office for 2 terms only, and that the party candidate for the prime minister position is also limited to 2 terms.

Kem Sokha also said that if his party win the election, he will amend the election law to change the current proportional voting system to an election for individuals. In addition, he will also review the wealth (owned by government officials), and reform the justice system, as his main priority. In conclusion, Kem Sokha said that if the MoI will give him an authorization soon for the formation of the party, he plans on organizing a party congress at the end of July.

Some believe that the reason Kem Sokha named his party: Human Rights Party, was so that the party’s name stays close to that of his former organization. Therefore, it is believed that Kem Sokha chose the party name on purpose so as to coincide with CCHR’s name, in this manner, Kem Sokha wants his supporters to easily remember and recognize the party’s name.

"Human Right Party"? Aside from
being better than SRP or NRP, I
don't like it. While human right
is important, but if you party
failed to provide jobs to them,
then they will be suffered human
right abuse by your Human Right
Party. Moreover, you will have
problem dealing with country that
have different human right
definition than you do, and that
can hindered trade and growth
for the country. Consequently,
this will cause people to suffer
human right abuse by you own Human
Right Party again, LOL.
You are not making a good start,
Sokha. Consider a different name
for you party, will ya?

Hi KEM SOKHA!

As a president of human right your name has been dishonoured by corruption. Until now, you haven't denied anything and apparently you don't mind. Why?
I will suggest the name of your party: CORRUPTION YUMAN RIGHT KEM SOKHA PARTY.

Hi every one!
Kem Sokha attacked Sam Rainsy again in interview today with RFA. I predict today that Kem Sokha will fight Sam Rainsy badly in the future. At first he will win some votes and join CPP if necessary to form a government. Then of course he will lose but in the next 10 years only. This gives Hun Sen more than enough time to prepare oil income. Tell me if Hun Sen will listen to internationnal world once he doesn't have to beg anymore ?
Here is my analyse: Hun Sen sent Kem Sokha over 10 years ago to spy on FLNPK (Son San party) and destroyed it. Then he jumped to Funcinpec, but got out because it was important to keep Funcinpec alive. Then he supposed to spy Sam Rainsy party but couldn't make it, by the way Heng Pov tried to do the same. Now he created this party by Hun Sen's order to split the votes. So what ever we say what ever we do will not change him because he has no decision.

Whatever has Kem Sokha been thought of, he would highly unlikely become an actor among the others in Cambodian real politik, especially in the upcoming national election 2008. It is too far beyond the fact. Just a tip, supports he gained during his time as NGO member cannot be proven enough that they are his party affiliated. Being suspicious as Hun Sen's man to divide voters remains possible so far, unless he proved to be real democrat. So dream on, as it never happens.

The reason why the people of Khmer can not polisickally build the tree of Democracy, because we unconscientiously love to fight and blame each other. This is only my dull observation, in order to defeat Samdech Hun Sen party, more or all the opposite parties must brotherhoodly and nationally join together. Otherwise, we can simply predict the result of eletion 08!

Congradulations Mr. Kem
A lot of Khmer people inside and outside are waiting to support you.

Hi 12:06 AM
You cannot write the sentence in capital lettre like this. Doing so means insulting and impolite in English. So I presume you write from Cambodia, right ?

SR party + KS party = 50+1
SR party alone = 50-20
KS party alone = 50-30

FYI, 12:57, that is called
Khmenglish. It is not English,
but a fusion of English and Khmer.
As you know, Khmer don't used
case lettering. So please, stop
complaining about everything with
Khmer in it, alright? However, if
you're worry about being strike by
lightning unless you complaint
about something, you can used
Gringoes' Slaves as your target
because no one care about those
scums of the planet.

Human Rights Party, LoL..This guy is still stuck on his old job. All I got to say is what in the hell made him decide to start a party? Clearly he is not seeing the fact that other parties can`t beat CPP. He think he got enough vote to go it alone? SRP is getting closer. But damn this guy decided to take Democracy away from Cambodia. Kem Sokha is going to get what? 1% percent vote that could have made SRP won? What a FOOL. Everone should note that these parties, If they united, they will fall apart quickly. FUNC. family got dissolve. I was a member with them for a short time, and let me tell ya, these people play favoritism. Don`t like the young telling them anything. And that is inbedded in our culture. Listen to your elders, and dont talk back. So now FUNC is left with the dumbies. All the educated ones went with SRP.

Mr. Kem Sokha is not a serious contender in the Cambodian political arena at this point in time. The name of his party implies that it exists for one purpose only...to check the abuses within the current government. If such is the scope of this organization, then it does not, at the present time, have any clear goal, ideology or organizational structures to remain viable. If anything, it is a mere extension of the agency, which he had worked.

Mr. Kem Sokha is hedging and hoping to be picked up by a political party in a coalition and to remain relevant to the Cambodian political scenes. Simply put, Mr. Kem Sokha is seeking a better employment opportunity, with some degrees of visibilities....

Another aspect of Mr. Kem Sokha's party, which requires examination, is the tendencies of its president to attack opposition parties--namely the SRP.

These attacks implies that Mr. Kem Sokha and his political party is a Frankenstein creation, and that they are created as a tool to be wielded at strategic moment against a given party in an event that such a party might be in a position to unseated the incumbent political party.

If the various news headlines are to be believed, which seemed to indicated that Mr. Kem Sokha had been involved in nefarious activities, then it is reasonable to assume that someone has gotten to Mr.Kem Sokha.

In order for any linking doubts to be dispeled, and for Mr. Kem Sokha's political party to be taken seriously by the average Khmers, further clarification is required..of the Human Right Party objectives, internal by laws, its governing body, its national reconciliation (uniting Khmers for a better future) strategies, its national economic and developmental philosophies...

If none of these are clarified, and furthermore, if the Human Rights Party begins to make pitches for the attention of oversea Khmers, we know what its real purposes are...

So said....happy new years to SRP, the CPP attack dogs on this website...

I did already, stupid.

There is no wave for Kem Sokha to make. The reason he formed the party was because he wished to negotiate for a position in the SRP led alliance. Ranariddh is doing the same. They both need someone to resuscitate their dead career.

Anonymous said...

So, will they all ultimately
united to defeat the undefeated
one and only Committed People
Party (the CPP)?
