Kem Sokha, the former president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR), sent his application to the Ministry of Interior (MoI) this Tuesday to ask for the authorization to form a political party in order to compete in the 2008 general election.

Khieu Sopheak, MoI spokesman, said that the ministry received the application and it is now undergoing review.

Kem Sokha told RFA that the application to form a political party was done on Tuesday, and he also said that this party will start its operation both inside and outside the country, immediately after receiving the [MoI] authorization.

Kem Sokha said: “I am contacting the MoI to register the name of the party, and form the party. But, this is the first day that we are contacting the MoI, so the MoI did not reply back to us yet.”

Kem Sokha added: “This party received the financial support from overseas Cambodians, and they have organized collection of donations from Cambodians in the USA and Canada in the first step. Next, [the collection of donations] will be expanded to various other countries. Some have participated as [party] members by paying a monthly contribution of $25 in the US, and Canada where such activities are conducted. Cambodians in the US and Canada plan to hold a congress with the participation of delegates from various states and provinces to discuss the formation of the party.”

Kem Sokha did not reveal the name of his party yet, but earlier, it was announced inside Cambodia that the planned party will be named: Freedom (Sereypheap) Party.

Kem Sokha has officially resigned from CCHR at the beginning of April, the successors of Kem Sokha are: Ou Vireak at the CCHR, and Pa Nguon Tieng at the Voice of Democracy radio station.

Hmm ... Freedom Party? Not what I
have in mind, but certainly sounds
better than SRP or NRP. At least,
the man is not worry about someone
trying to steal his party from him,
like Ranarith or Sam Rainsy. People
who name the party after themselves
cannot be trusted because they are
dictators. They want to grip on to
their party and not allowing more
qualify people to run it.
Otherwise, they would not have name
the party in their own name. Now
tell me, who will be able to steal
the Sam Rainsy or the Ranarith
Party?

To get back to the name, I would
instead just knock off singapore, Taiwan, or Japan winning party's
name and use it synonym or
something. I think Singapore
has People Action Party which
have been ruling it since the
60's. And I think Japan has Liberal
People Party; this is sort of the
CPP of Japan if you know what I
mean, they are the giant party in
Japan, LOL. ... .

I believe that Kem Sokha should join with Sam Rainsy to work together for common goal in 2008. If he set his own party, I don't think he will have any chance. You need more monies for the campaign expenses and will not be able to put candidates in all electorated.

Well, you'll have a chance if Sam
Rainsy offered to nominate him the
PM position if the party won the
election, but what is the chance
of that happening?

WELL DONE! AT LEAST YOU ARE BORN CAMBODIAN AND DIE FOR CAMBODIA... NOT FOR UNCLE SAM GRINGOS!

THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAM RAIN SHIT AND K SOKHA!

CHEYO KEM SOHKA...

He will get the mony for his campaign from the CPP because Hun Sen and Co. have the most benefit of Kem Sokha's party. So far, it is obvious the Kem Sokha enjoys the protection by the CPP, or how is it to explain why he wasn't judged in his trial?

Well, in cambodia people has the
freedom to settle their case
without the government on their
back. That is how he wasn't judged.

Yeah, but the other parties are
not too challenging to the CPP.
What the CPP need is some fresh
punching bags to keep them in
shape. Do you mind?

As long as Kem Sokha does not play Son Sann trick-wholesale republic idealist group to Sihanoukist group then he is entitled to his political rights.
To Be or Not to Be is the question...

True, Khmer people (or Asian in
general) don't like to be tricked.
If you do, don't get caught or
you will be history.

As for "to Be or Not to Be", that
is not the question, but the Hun
Sen's Decision. We are talking
Cambodia here, so pay attention.
Damn, why do I sound like a Raper.
I must have caugh Ah gringoes'
slaves diseases. OMG, I need to
get myself decontaminated
immediately.

Bye! help...! Doctor...!

Two hypothesis:
1. The creation of this new party is a good tactic from CPP in order to destabilize and divide the SRP and whose are sympathisant to their ideas.
2. However if the americans are behind this one also, under the pretext to enhance democracry with multiplication of little parties, it would be a mess that would turn into shit as usual in the american way of foreign politics....
