The president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rigths (CCHR) declared today – a day where a reception is prepared in honor of his departure from his position starting 01 May, to open a new political party – that he will cooperate with the Democratic Movement.

Kem Sokha said that following his departure from CCHR, he will form a new political party and he will look for a truly democratic party, and that he will join with that party.

Kem Sokha said: “I support the unification, in the name of Khmer [people], in the interest of democracy [because] there is nothing against the goal I pursued at CCHR in the past, that is we want true democracy in the country.”

Mrs. Mu Sochua, SRP Secretary-General, said that she welcomes Kem Sokha’s new political party, she also said that SRP is calling for a Democratic Movement, and since Mr. Kem Sokha is a democrat, his participation and cooperation will not be an issue.

Mu Sochua said: “SRP calls for the formation of Democratic Movement, and in our name as democrats, there will be no problem in the unification for the formation of this Democratic Movement.”

Muth Channtha, NRP spokesman, said his royalist party has no worry about the new [Kem Sokha] party.

He stressed that the NRP will not likely reject the alliance with this new political party: “If Kem Sokha join the NRP, most likely, it can be done.”

Kul Panha, Comfrel director, said that in the Cambodian Constitution, and the election law, the formation of a political party if the right of each citizen.

Kul Panha added that this is nothing new for Kem Sokha in his formation of this party, since he was a former politician.

Recently, Sam Rainsy, SRP President, called for the formation of a Democratic Movement in order to form a party in order to take victory from the CPP in the upcoming 2008 general election. Negotiations have been held [between SRP] and the NRP and the Sangkum Jatiniyum Front Party.

At a meeting held by the Minsitry of Agriculture on 09 April, Prime Minister Hun Sen replied to the formation of the Democratic Movement by declaring that the CPP should plan a new strategy to fight back against the democrats and royalists who want to topple the CPP.
