Kem Sokha, the former president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) has decided to name his new political party: “Human Rights Party.”

Inspired by CCHR over which he presided during the last four years, Kem Sokha decided to name his political party, the “Human Rights Party.” Confident, he counts to obtain some seats at the National Assembly in the upcoming 2008 election.

“On Tuesday, I gave the statutes of my party to the Ministry of Interior. While waiting, if nothing will prevent the registration of my party, I already planned to organize its first congress at the beginning of July. We didn’t set up yet provincial structures, but we hope to mobilize between 200 to 500,000 followers from now until the 2008 election,” Kem Sokha planned. He officially resigned his director position at the CCHR on Wednesday.

Kem Sokha has past experience in politics with Son San’s Buddhist Liberal Democratic Party (BLDP). He was then the chairman of the parliament commission for human rights. It was through this past experience that he claims his party will improve the county. “One cannot consider development without taking care of the respect of human rights, the latter provides power to the citizens even if they are poor,” he elaborated.

Lay Vorasith, the official in charge of political parties affair of the Ministry of Interior, confirmed Thursday that he received Kem Sokha’s party registration. “It will not be considered before the Khmer New Year,” Lay Vorasith said. Cambodia now counts more than 50 political parties, but only about 20 of them participated in the latest election, and out of these 20, only 12 competed in the commune election.

Dear Mr Kem Sokha, please do not use the word Human Right for your party at all. Khmer rouge has already used Democratic and they have almost killed the entire Cambodian population from the planet. Please leave this word Human Right for NGO organisation to use. If if use this word, human right in Cambodia will no longer exist. It will be your party property and you will be end up like Pol Pot by killing others for not respecting your party !!!!!!

Creating a new party at this time is only reassuring that the CPP will win the 2008 election. Another opposition party split the opposition vote.. do you think so?

although i see his point on naming his party human rights, (so that people (mainly villagers) can identify with him). I think you are right to say leave this name to the ngo, to keep its puriety. I think the name should be indpendent or reform. or even the Cambodian national indpendent of reform for human rights.(just joking)..

Kem Sokha just want to assure he got a seat for himself at the parliament. For one seat only What can he do for the country? He must get advanced money from hun xen to split the votes for 2008 election. Cambodia doesn't need any little party. It's a wast of the money and votes.

while there are pro and con for the establishment of Kem Sokha new Party, I wish to give some advice here;
1-Please do not use Human Right party. This will reflect to Pol pot who used democratic and has completely destroyed democracy system.
2-Work with Sam rainsy party in areas such, if any areas there are strong support of Sam Rainsy, Kem Sokha should not put any candidate in that areas. Kem Sokha should put strong candidates where CPP has strong sign of winning.
3-Declaration of coalition with Sam Rainsy if wanting to be the government.
4-Do not criticise each other during the election or before the election.
5-Map out together, policies to improve Cambodia after election 2008.
6-Enforcing the present government to understand the role of opposition and the salary of their leader.
7-All state visites from foreign leadership ( Included State dinner )must have included leader of opposition.
8-Enforcing all military leaders, police leaders to understand the role of member of Parliament included all opposition.
9-Question to Om Yin Tieng, who is he? He is just an advisor to Hun Sen. Therefore he cannot represent the Government and cannot criticise any other member of parliament. He must understand his role ( very limited )

Hey folks, if these parties of
your going to unite and form a
democratic movement, can you give
us a forecast as to who going to be
the PM, Deputy PM, ... I mean what
will Ranarith, Thomico, Sokha, ...
title be, and so on?

Hello Poster 5:52AM ! If they invite me as their advisor, I will advice them as follow;
As a coalition government, a party who has more seats, their leader will be the PM, then, another small party will Deputy PM. then another small party would have a ministerial position depend to the size of their MP. The Coalition government would be formed base on their respective policies. Some party would want to form the coalition but stay outside of the government. They will support the government with monies supplied and votes for the new laws. If all politicians are really genuine and are working in good faith for their Nation and their people, position is not so importand. The most important is to use democratic system instead of war to get ridge of all monky from Cambodian leaders which have destroy this country for many decades and have been the obstacle of this country for her development since after UN surpervised election in 1993. THe same time, Cambodia need to move foward by settle all the oustanding issues such;
-Crimes against humanity of the KR.
-Landgrabbings
-Corrupted officials.
-Re- establisment of National armies and Police.
-Re-establish Cambodia nationa court system.
-Save Cambodian people from starvation and poverty.

NO MATTER WHAT THE OPPOSITON PLAN OR WIN, HUN XEN IS NOT GOING TO STEP DOWN. HE RATHER TAKE ALL OF YOU, THE WHOLE KHMER RACE TO EXINCTION , NOT SROK MEAR ANH. HE WILL KILL, RATHER TO HANG ON TO POWER. ELCTION WIN IS GOOD FOR HIM, BUT IF HE LOSE THE WHOLE COUNTRY WILL LOSE. NO WAY OUT. ONLY his DEATH CAN LIBERATE KHMER FROM YUONS.

Not bad, 6:51, I like your idea,
and seems democratically fair to
me also. However, frankly, I am
not clear how to implement this
legally. Would you mind ellaborate
your idea for me please. I mean
are you planning to run seperately,
and combine at the end? If so, you
might have a legal issue. However,
if you combine first and run as
a whole, I don't see any problem
with that. But then again, how do
you determine who got what?

Hello poster 7:33AM,
From my experiences in foreign country, all parties can run separately and combine together under coalition agreement later after election. But they must work together for the same goal. At present Sam Rainsy party has the most experience. They knew where they can win the election. So they should tell their potential coalition partners not to put candidate there to divise their votes. They have to leave other places where CPP were strong for Kem Sokha party or other democratic party to contest with CPP. In this methode each party will concentrate onto their local expenditure. They will pay less on campaign. They don't have any legal problem to form a coalition after the election. If they have 50+1 %, they can run the country. Now it is not like before which they need 2/3 of the seats. So it is important that all the small parties should concentrate to win 1 or 2 or seats that is all and leave the majority to Sam Rainsy party to lead.
2008 is the most important year. therefore everyone shouldn't make mistake. If that election CPP still win than you and I should forget about Cambodia. We will not see Cambodia prosperous at all in our lifetime. THe monky cannot develop Cambodia at all.

What on Earth is Human Right Party?
Does Kem Sohka is out to fight for the right of the human race???ahah

Damn man!Kem Sohka is trying to fight for the whole wide world!!!I am not sure he is out to fight for Cambodian people right!!!!

The standard is just too high to fight for the human race and I don't even know if he can fight for his own right!!!ahhahahhahah

I will be laughing some more!!!ahah

Okay, that is not up to me, they
are going to work it out with the
NEC way ahead of time and get some
new laws/rules rolling, ..., and
whatever else needed.

Aside from that, are you telling
me that in your country, if you
have three parties running,
hypothetically, and say the
Republican got 40%, the democrat
got 35%, and the Liberal got 25%.
Accordingly, the Republican can't
be President of the country if
the Liberal and Democrat decided
to combined to get 60%?

To 12:40PM

Yes!!!ahahaahahhahah!

Cambodia use 50% plus one formula!
I told you this political system can only exist in Cambodia nowhere else in the world!!!ahahhahah!

I doubt it, but there is nothing
wrong with it, so long you can get
the majority to support such a
rule. It doesn't pay to get a heart
attact over it. That is just the
nature of Democracy.
