One Sam Rainsy Party activist from Boeng village, Mean Rith commune, Sandan district, Kompong Thom province, was killed by an unknown assailant at midnight Friday.
Sok Mab, a SRP candidate to the Mean Rith commune election, said this afternoon that 41-year-old Chheng Ly, a SRP activist, was killed by an unknown assailant. He was hacked in several places by an axe. “Last night, we were just sleeping at 11:00 PM, when the murder took place. [The victim] was hacked by 7 or 8 axes on his head, and he was taken out to be buried…”
Uong Maly, a Sandan district police inspector, said that the authority concluded that the perpetrator of the murder could be a family member because of family dispute about a divorce.
Uong Maly said: “Based on our investigation, it could be his father-in-law and his brother-in-law, because he had disputes with his father-in-law and brother-in-law. The dead guy, he is bad, he used to threat and he divorced his wife, they sue each other, but we kept on making them compromise and not divorcing each other. But his father-in-law did not want his daughter to remain married to him because that dead guy, he is very bad. Last night, the incident took place at midnight, the next morning, the father-in-law and the brother-in-law all fled.”
The police inspector did not think that the murder was politically involved. The Sam Rainsy Party office did not provide any detail yet on this murder.
