SINGAPORE: Singapore and Cambodia are set for closer cooperation in healthcare, especially in the prevention of infectious diseases.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan and his Cambodian counterpart, Dr Nuth Sokhom on Tuesday, 3 April 2007.
It provides a framework for collaboration between the two countries to prevent the spread of infectious diseases across borders.
It also enables them to share expertise in border control measures, as well as in the training of healthcare professionals.
Cambodia has seen cases of avian influenza infections and three people have died from the disease.
"We are keen to help them as a fellow ASEAN member and nowadays. There's no such thing as local infectious disease outbreak. All disease outbreaks are now global because of air connections so I think that by helping them, we are helping ourselves. I think they have a different kind of problem. So understanding their conditions there may give us that extra few days or few weeks of advance notice so that's our main public security interest," says Mr Khaw.
"We have to work for our common benefit but in fact we got chance, Cambodian side to work with Singapore side (in order to... Because you may know that you are among the best in the region, so we got chance in doing cooperation with your country). We have to strengthen our cooperation in order to protect our people," Dr Nuth Sokhom says.
