Cambodian police officials told VOA Monday they had help from US authorities after an April 1 drug bust that netted 18 suspects and 3 tons of drug-making materials.

Brig. Gen. Mek Dara, chief of the anti-drug office for the Interior Ministry, said the US Drug Enforcement Agency helped identify the substances confiscated in the raids.

Cambodian police found 12 different chemicals for the production of methamphetamine in operations on the day of local elections, April 1, he said.

Cambodia's relationship with US officials has improved markedly in recent months. Most recently, National Police Chief Gen. Hok Lundy was invited to Washington for international crime discussions.
