"We Cambodians will use the benefits from oil and gas properly": Another hollow pledge?

Hun Sen downplays foreign concern over Cambodia's oil benefits

PHNOM PENH, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen here on Tuesday called on foreign countries not to be concerned too much about Cambodia's oil and gas benefits expected to come in 2009-2010.

"We Cambodians will use the benefits from oil and gas properly," he said while addressing the annual work review of the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation.

Part of the benefits will be spent to expand rural roads into national roads across the country, he said.

Earlier this year, he said that the benefits will mainly go to the education and health sectors.

"For nearly 30 years, we have developed our country from zero level to the current prosperity with political stability. During that time, people have only small fish to eat. When have gold (namely the benefits of oil and gas), we still know how to develop this country," he said on Tuesday.

"we thank all of the foreigners who have expressed concern about the so-called 'oil curse' for Cambodia," he added.

"Oil curse" used to mean that countries rich in oil and gas can't benefit from the resources but instead become trapped with corruption and injustice due to their poor management capability.

Currently, Chevron from the united states, LG from South Korea, and a Japanese company have invested and conducted exploration in the oil and gas fields in off-sea Cambodia.

The government declines to give exact figures about the oil reserves. The World Bank has put them at 2 billion barrels while the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) confirmed 700 million barrels.

A UNDP study implied that future oil revenues alone could provide over three times the kingdom's official development assistance received in 2005.

Dream on Khmer, even your Angkor Wat don't belong to Khmer and what do think about the oil. Just the Angkor along that should have your grandparents on pension already and if we also get oil every Khmer should have a proper house and toilet. But just wait to see how America get into this, while they want more than Cambodia is needed.

Hun Sen talk about 30 years of developing from nothing. Of course anything by meaning of just alittle is more than nothing. It is what you call 0 is no more than 1 or less than 1. Stupid guy. Lets get this straight, for 30 years under his rule, nothing happen until this last 5 years dumb ass. That is when the donors were getting on his ass, the SRP put on more pressure than the Func*pec. Stability? What stability is he talking about? all I hear is khmer People getting land robbed from them. Market place being sold to government officals. More like stolen. People need to hold some kind of mass demonstrations in Phnom Penh. Let the world see what CPP would do to them. Why let CPP lynch of small group for? Might as well go as a whole like a million.

When talking about money! I will never and ever trust AH HUN SEN with any of the money or oil money!

One must look no further! Why not examine AH HUN SEN himself closely about his personal affair including his house, his income, his property, his bank account around the world, his spending habit! What about his shaddy connection with AH SOK KONG who managed Angkor Wat tourism which bring in hundred million of dollars every years,...

One of these day I would like Cambodian people to take tour on AH HUN SEN property the most guarded place on Earth!!!!Why AH HUN SEN is so secret and so afraid of who?? He has over 2000 military personel at his command! I know they don't come cheap!

The oil money is for the next CPP young generation to spend and spend they will and they don't give a fuck!!!They will spoil themselves with all the luxury!!!!

If AH HUN SEN is true to his word, I like to see more money spending on Cambodian marine, navy, and army to defense Cambodia against the Vietcong and the Thaicong!!! I do agree that education and health should get top priority!!!

AH HUN SEN thank nobody except himself!!!!Money! Money! Money! Money is never enough for anybody including AH HUN SEN himself!!!!

Khmer Nex Gen Said:
Hun Sen Government should use this oil money to build a Highway surrounding Cambodia. This bold project will be serving two purposes:
1. As a country border because of its permanant fixture of the Highway (It can be compared for the Great Wall of China)
2. As one of his economics policies: transportation infrastruction, and thus, promoting economic activities in the remote area.

If Hun Sen makes this bold move, he will be considered as a Khmer Hero coz the Youn Vietcong will be no longer able to take more land from Cambodia.

Do your own thing and your own thoughts, and stop listening to the Vietcong.
