Cambodia celebrates 54th birthday of King Sihamoni

May 14, 2007

Cambodia on Monday celebrated the 54th birthday of King Norodom Sihamoni with a three- day public holiday and various posters erected on main boulevards to highlight the monarch's image.

According to the government's notice, the public holiday ran from Monday to Wednesday all over the kingdom.

Meanwhile, huge posters of the King could be seen near the Independence Monument, and above the front gates of the Royal Palace, the National Assembly and some ministries.

Major newspapers on Monday published stories and many rarely-seen file photos of the monarch.

They also printed full pages of blessing and admiration from senior government officials and close friends of the King.

On Saturday, a diplomatic team from the Chinese Embassy met the King at the Royal Palace to wish him happy birthday.

Sihamoni was chosen as Cambodia's monarch by the nine-member Royal Council in October 2004, after his father, former king Norodom Sihanouk, announced abdication. He is the second king for the Kingdom of Cambodia in its 60 years strong of history.

Sihamoni was born on May 14, 1953, in Phnom Penh, as son of Sihanouk and former queen Monineath.

I don't know if this sounds stupid
or what? I mean we worked very hard
and sacrificed so much to oust the
French and to acquired our own
indepencence, only to place a
French man on our throne
afterward, hehehe! Is there
something wrong with this picture?

He look likes his father more than his mother. I didn't see the King looks French but a face with a cheek bone of Asian, just that his skin is light. There're many Khmers who mixed with Portuguese, Spanish for more than 400 years ago. I saw the King in person he looks Khmer to me.

Well, you can't look at the figure.
You must put him under an MRI
scanner and look at his brain to
get some hints.

His majesty was born in Srok Khmer. He is Khmer. So if his mother is half French of The Italian origion. Get over it w/ those stupid rasist nationality, please people.

The question is, deos Khmer royal family has any plan of his sucession? or continue on with the real royal blood on the throne? or after his Majesty is gone, who will be taking his role? The way it looks, it 's over once King Sihamoni is dead. It will be a war or else some idiot of a make up royal blood will take over.

So far none of the royal family seem to have any leading role or to have a serious plan for this event at all. Seems like all are worry for their own survival from day to day just like us. What a shame.

Wondering, what must be going into his Majesty head every night? or may be he could not careless either. Whatever.......I'm just enjoy myself for now and who cares? :)

8:44, there were a lot of French
people born in Cambodia also during
Sihamoni youth.

And No, Khmer's throne only belong
to Khmer people, not French nor
Italian. We don't want to harm
Khmer people with EU evil laws.

PS: Oh, and it aint no racist to
dethrone foreigner from Khmer's
throne. we don't mind foreigners
come to live an work here, so long
they don't take the only throne
from Khmer people and some for
the few key tiptop position in
politic that should only reserved
for real Khmer only.

King Sihanouk knew that 56 years ago. He knew dawn well that if Khmer could look a little prettier or better by mixing with French or Italian then why not?

What's wrong with King Sihamoni? Isn't he o.k? and why wouldn't the old King propose the Throne for other Princes? Ranarith would jump for it with pure joy! and so deos Chakrapong or Yuveneath? or... and or....? Why Sihamoni? If look or being pure Khmer is so important?

None was matter to King Sihanouk and we doubt very much that it would matter to other people.

Sihamoni looks great on that high seat! Deosn't he? and he speaks Khmer, respects Khmer and loves Khmers. His Majesty's life is for Khmer. Would you think, he means anything to France or Italian?

May be with small tiny fraction and that is all. If he doesn't know that, then that is him. He deosn't know :)

His mom looks French, but she goes and stays where The old King goes. Eat the same food & breath the same air her husband breaths.
Her mother ( Mrs. Pomme ) perhaps had followed the royal family long and we mean way long before we were all born.

How much does she know about French? or Italian? and how long her father ( Mr. Izzi? ) had remained with her? and her Mom? and how much time did Queen Monique actually spent in France? or Italy? doing what? did we know?

Yes, King was raised in Europe, but by other Eu. People and not his parents. He just happened to pick up a lot of stuff from here and there. We bet, he knew a whole more about Chineese people than those people knew themself.

We thought that was pretty cool.

Ô Khmers who "need" a King, we get a weak king. A king should play a symbolic role in inspiring Khmers. But he didn’t. He was a hope for Khmers. But hope on him had only faded away. If he could not play a symbolic role as expected in a country that is looking to build a democratic society, our need for a kingship is over. As a king, he has to learn to play a role as a king. But until now, he doESN’t. If he doesn’t, he can only give a “coup de grace” to the Cambodia’s monarchy.
