Cambodian tourist arrivals up 20 percent in first four months

Tuesday May 29, 2007

PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Tourist arrivals to Cambodia rose 20 percent in the first four months compared to the same period last year, Tourism Minister Thong Kong said Tuesday.

Some 710,000 arrivals were recorded between January and April, he said, boosted by an increase in travellers from neighbours Thailand and Vietnam.

Vietnamese arrivals jumped 70 percent, while the number of Thais visiting Cambodia went up 38 percent, he told AFP.

Thailand and Vietnam "are among the top 10 countries" for arrivals, Thong Khon said.

"Tourists from Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and other countries ... increase every year," he said, adding that visitors from South Korea and Japan still make up the largest number of foreign tourists.

Tourism is one of the few money-spinners in Cambodia, one of the world's poorest countries, and the government hopes to attract three million visitors by 2010.

Cambodia has recently increased the number of direct flights to the country and last week inked a deal with Yangon to begin air links from Bagan and Mandalay, Myanmar's top tourist stops, to Cambodia's Angkor temple town, Siem Reap

Cambodia recorded about 1.7 million arrivals in 2006, bringing 1.4 billion dollars in revenue.

"We have peace, good security ... and our tourist destination is safe," Thong Khon said.

Where is the money gone ? So much money that they can't even afford a public toilet around Angkor complex. The Auhority should look into this issue. It doesn't cost much. About time Khmer govt have basic decency and put national interests and dignity before the eyes international guests.

Good question, let us walk through
it together. Let say you are our
tourist and you got 3,000$ to spend
for your vacation. Do you give this
money to our government? of course
not. Right off the bat, 1,500$ go
to your airline ticket. An when
you arrive here, 30$ a day go to
car rental, 50$ a day go to hotel,
20$ a day go to food, and ... .
So out of 1,500$, the government
should get about 10% which is
about 150$. Now where, does this
150$ goes? Well, we have to repair
road, we have to have police to
look out for you, we have to paid
people to maintain the landscape,
etc. ... . Got the idea? So,
bring a roll of toilet paper with
you, next time you visit Cambodia.
Okay?

Cambodia is one fucken dirty country in Southeast Asia if not the world!

I had noticed that many tourists are not interested spending their money in Cambodia besides buying a plane ticket to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat because everything is dirty even the foods, the roads, the water and everything that goes with it especially in the market! Please don’t go to the market and it is fucken dirty as hell!!

When will Cambodia under AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave dictator move beyond this dirtiness??? All these fucken dirtiness in Cambodia reflected in the mind of stupid Cambodian leaders and of course it will pass down to Cambodian people too!!!

I am not surprised that the Vietcong and the Thaicong were able to steal more tourists from Cambodia due to better sanitation and now Myanmar will do the same!!

I never thought Cambodian leader can be so stupid for not taking cleanliness and good sanitation as key to promote more tourism beside promoting more flight!!! Oh well! This how AH HUN SEN and AH SOK KONG Vietcong slave will operate from now on before they are fall from power and the sooner the better!!

Well, I am sure Cambodia is a lot
cleaner than Long Beach right now,
but we'll continued to improve as
the money is rolling in.

What? Long Beach? What is that? Is that a city or what? You want to compare Siem Reap to Long Beach?

I had a chance to see Long Beach in Photograph at once time and it is damn pretty! I heard Long Beach are building more and more of everything!! Oh well! One of these days I will make a trip to Long Beach and check it out for myself and let see if Siem Reap can be compare to a tiny city of Long Beach!

I was impressed by the speed of services at the gate on Nov'2006. Photos were taken, entry ID cards were produced manually with a cheap computer, but the job got done within satisfactory time. Now 710,000 visitors time $20 each one week entrance fee is $14,200,000 minus 50% overheads. $7 millions revenue already made. Siem Reap roads were so clean and organized. With global warming, temperature was over 100 F degree in November, the heat can be a big impact.

No, not 710,000 visitors in one
week time, but 4 months, 9:18.

And we should get into a cool
beverage bussiness for the warm
climax, hehehe!!!

Things have been getting better. They could have been a lot better. As long as we are moving forwards... it's good progress...
