A high-ranking government official said that government legal councils are continuing to perform additional study and evaluation on the request and the petition to pardon Prince Norodom Ranariddh.

Khieu Kanharith, the government spokesman, told RFA this Sunday that: “Lawyers are discussing with each other first. Based on what I know, they are now reviewing [the case].”

When asked whether there is any hope or positive sign or not, Khieu Kanhatih said that he cannot answer for Hun Sen.

Heng Vong Bunchhat, one of the officials at the government legal council, said that he cannot provide any comment because he is on vacation.

On 12 May, a delegation of 19 high ranking NRP officials visited King Norodom Sihamoni and handed to him a request and a petition thumbprinted by 200,000 supporters asking the king to pardon Prince Ranariddh so that he can return back to Cambodia to lead his party to compete in the upcoming 2008 general election.

After handing over the request to the king, a source indicated that the king turned over the request to Hun Sen for review and evaluation, but, Hun Sen, turned the request to the government legal councils to study further on this request.

Muth Chantha, NRP spokesman, said that his party is waiting for a reply after handing the request to the king. “Up to now, we did not receive any news yet on the request for royal pardon for Prince Ranariddh. The king will use his royal right as prescribed by the constitution because this is a political issue, therefore the king asked for an opinion from Samdech Hun Sen before resolving the pardon issue.”

Prince Norodom Ranariddh was sentenced by the Phnom Penh municipal court on 13 March to 18-month jail, and $150,000 in fine for breach of trust in the sale of the Funcinpec party headquarters in Phnom Penh.

The prince denied and refused to recognize the sentence, he claimed that the sentence is politically oriented.

I hope they try to wrap up this
case as quick as possible. Ranarith
is not as bad as World Bank, and
we can certainly used his
experiences. He had done great
leading serveral ministries and we
should allowed him to continue
to help our country.
