Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni has agreed to accept a petition from the Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP) for a royal pardon of its president with a jail term of 18 months, NRP official said on Saturday.
"This is a positive sign from the King for a royal pardon of Prince Norodom Ranariddh," NRP spokesman Muth Chanthan told Xinhua.
The King is expected to receive and send the petition to Prime Minister Hun Sen who should then consider a pardon of Ranariddh, he said, adding that the letter bears nearly 200,000 thumb-prints from the prince's supporters.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court in March sentenced Ranariddh in absentia to 18 months in jail for breach of trust over the sale of the co-ruling Funcinpec Party's headquarters in the capital.
Before and after the sentence was made, he has stayed overseas in order to shun trouble and embarrassment.
He was ousted as Funcinpec President in October 2006 for neglecting party affairs and being unable to cooperate with, and later established NRP.
According to law, Ranariddh can't re-start his political life unless he completes two-thirds of his term or receives a royal pardon from the King.
Ranariddh once served as First Prime Minister of the Cambodian government and President of the National Assembly of Cambodia.

Good, I hope we wrap up this case
and put it behind us and use the
time to create jobs for the needies
who long waited for it instead.
How many time has Ranariddh been pardoned? I'm sick of him. It sad some people in srok khmer don't know too much about him, they're still believe in him. What has he done for srok khmer?
Well, he has done many things: He
was one of the particant who help
cambodia to form the coalition
government; he participated with
the UN to pressure the Vietcong
to withdraw from cambodia; he has
lead serveral ministries that has
produced outstanding results for
Cambodia, ..., and the list go
on and on, much much more than
the SRP has accomplished for
Cambodia.
Sihamoney, since at it, why don't you pardon Hun Sen/Heng Samrin/Chea Sim for signing Khmer land to the VN?
Does anyone in Khmer has any more moral left?
All visitors of the Blog have the right to make any comment but with a sense of ethic and responsibili ty. They must not commit the Lese Majesty.
According to the article 27 of the Constitution, the king has the right to pardon any convicted person without requesting the consent of the PM.
But some princes should not mess up with rascal politicians like Hun Sen. They create problems to those princes and embarassement to the King.
Ha.... Time to leave Ranariddh alone. What he has done is creat a problem to Combodia. Without him, Combodia in one of a developing country in the world. You can scroll down your mind to the 1993 election. He drunk with position, girls, money..... and then 2nd and 3rd elections, he betrayed again and again. We mush stop talking about him and look forward to the upcoming election And support or vote the one who has better ethic to topple the VN CPP.
