NRP prepares petition for Cambodian King to pardon Prince Nanariddh

May 03, 2007

Delegates of the Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP) plan to meet with King Norodom Sihamoni early this month to present a petition for royal pardon of their president, local media reported on Wednesday.

The party is confident the government will agree with the petition, which has been thumb-printed by more than 200,000 party members, Cambodian newspaper the Samleng Yuvechun Khmer quoted party advisor Noranarith Anandayath as saying.

"The case of pardoning Prince Norodom Ranariddh is political. I believe the government will not oppose it because it is not a national dispute," another Cambodian newspaper the Kampuchea Thmey quoted him as saying.

Royal pardon will pave the way for the prince's return to take part in next year's national election, he added.

Prince Ranariddh was sentenced in absentia to 18 months in prison plus 150,000 U.S. dollars in compensation on March 13 for pocketing funds during the sale of the Funcinpec Party's headquarters while he headed the party.

After being dumped by Funcinpec as president in October 2006, the prince established NRP after his own name.

Ranariddh, now overseas, can be back onto his political track, after serving two-thirds of his term or being pardoned by the king upon such a request submitted by the government.

Both Ranariddh and Sihamoni are sons of former king Norodom Sihanouk.

I urge all Cambodian to all Cambodian politicians of all parties to abandon their old custom of sacrifying their lives for their leader again. This kind of custom has made Cambodia into a civil war of 1970-1975 and Cambodian self-destruction of 1975-1979 and also in 1997. Cambodian should learn from westernised nation, when a leader has been pushed aways. Let him go and move forward for another leader. With 14 millions population, we cannot afford to bank our country and the destiny of our people to one rotten wood. Eg, Rannarith has been alleged by many corrupted stories. He should be investigated for all of allegations against him. Another deputy of his party must dare to lead the party forward. This example is not only for Rannarith but for all party. Since 1989, China, Vietnam and many other countries have changed many leadership already. we cannot keep the same rooten wood to spread virus to other young blood with New Ideas and New direction with Good Vision.
