About 2,000 students and teachers at the Hun Sen-Phnom Penh Thmei high school have organized a 1-day demonstration to demand the resignation of the school principal who is accused of lacking moral character.
A female student from grade 9F who is standing among the demonstrators in front of the school on 23 May, said that the principal is a dictator who has no moral character: “He pulled the name tag from (the shirts of) female students, he told them to stand still, otherwise he could touch their breast and he would not be responsible for it. Last month, he punished 4 female students, he made them stand in front of the flagpole until all four of them passed out.”
Other students who participated in the demonstration on 23 May, also said that they demonstrate to remove the principal because he is a rude man, and when he talked to the students, he would call them names, such as girl-addicted, or boy-addicted etc…
The students claimed that they will not go back to class if the principal does not resign. “When he is angry, he would come in and say: ‘You all don’t know how to listen to each others? You are all girl-addicted and boy-addicted.’ He is a dictator-principal.”
Seventh grade teacher Ou Sokha who also participated in the demonstration with the students said the principal is corrupt and he lacks moral character, that is why about 50 teachers have participated in the demonstration to kick him out.
In response to these accusations, Uk Boss Satha, the school principal, clarified that while educating students, the words used are not always proper, however, he said that he is not alone in doing this, two other vice-principals are also doing the same. He said that he is discussing this case with the Education Department.
Uk Boss Satha said: “While educating students, sometimes, maybe it is a fact that we do not always use the proper words, I am one of them and there are two others who spoke about this … This is an emotional issue, I am reconciling them fist.”
Um Hoeung, the director of the Education Department, said that in reality, this case does not involve the students at all, it only involves the teachers and the management. About 20 teachers complained about the school principal being corrupt.
Um Hoeung added that he was initiating the resolution of the complaint on 21 May, but today the teachers decided to demonstrate. He said that he will continue to find out more about this case.
Today also, Rong Chhun, President of the Cambodian Independent Teachers’ Association (CITA), issued a statement regarding the demands made by students and teachers. In this statement, Rong Chhun asked officials from the Ministry of Youth, Education, and Sport, to provide a fair resolution to the demands, and that they should not allow the dispute to drag on for a long period of time.
