The Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee (CHRAC) which is a coalition of 18 NGOs issued a statement of 13 June asking Mr Kem Sokha, HRP President, to change his party name in order to avoid a confusion by the public that the civil society which is involved in human rights affairs and the Human Rights Party form a single group that are looking for political power just like any other political party. Kem Sokha could not be contacted yet for comment because he left Cambodia to Europe on Tuesday. However, Ou Chanrith, HRP spokesman, said that he has no plan to change the party name because the party name reflects the party’s mission. Ou Chanrith said that his party has several thousands of supporters who also support this name, and only a handful of NGOs that do not like this name.

That's perfect statement! Eventhough, Kem Sokha has full right to use and/or exploit this term to serve his own political purpose, many view that it is very dirty trick.

The term of 'human rights' has been used in Cambodia since after UNTAC left Cambodia. It is the term for people to employ as a reference in the event of violation occurred and appeal to be respected.

It would sound so weird when this party selected this term as their political party name.

"... and only a handful of NGOs that do not like this name."... This language sounds familiar. If my memory is not wrong it was someone powerful used this language to mock at/attack NGOs when the NGOs asked the government to reconsider something.

Pooooor man, you start to use such a language already...

Angel.

I think CHRAC as well as SRP are stupid on this case.

First, it is the right of Mr. Kem Sokha or anyone to use the word. In fact, Human Rights doesn't belong to this few NGOs--many NGOs do not support this statement.

Second, the actual statement said that Party only interest in power. Human Rights if for "NGOs". this is absolutely not true. Human Rights is a cause that requires all to promote and protect. In fact, political party has been encouraged to put it in their platform.

Third, CHRAC and SRP accuse the Cambodian people of being dumb-one that can not distinguish between a political party and an NGO.

Fourth, claiming that only NGOs work for the interest of the people is absurd. Discounting others like the political parties, businesses and the community themselves show that one is naive, ignorance or just outright lying.

Third, if Human Rights is a "public domain", so does "democracy" and "people", "khmer nation", etc. In fact, if the principle stands, CHRAC and the SRP must ask other parties with the word "democracy" or "people" or similar things to change their names also.

Again, if this is principle base and not personal attack base, then the people who want to protect the environment like the Siera Club in the US, the Greenpeace--all must ask that no one use the name "green party"; people who work for liberal cause must ask the "liberal party" to change their names; the labor unions must ask the "labor party" to changes theirs.

If this principle stand--only parties that are self-named become acceptable.

Is this why the Sam Rainsy Party is so proud of its name and will never change it?

In other parts of the world, people with certain causes support parties that have the same agendas--the environmentalists support the green party, the liberals support the Liberal Party and the Socialist support the socialist. Usually the party name reflect the agenda--this is usually the case but not always as shown by the Khmer Rouge's "Democratic Kampuchea".

hey 3:24...I dnt see SRP accuse HRP of using that name...It comes only from CHRAC - which among them there is also Cambodian Center for Human Rights of kem sokha....

Ddnt go around and accuse others.. and dnt imitate CPP way of being irresponsible.

Too bad for kem sokha... he will go no where.

CCHR is not and never was a member of CHRAC.

LICADHO as of June removed itself from CHRAC.

Most of the members are puppets. Check the list if you want to be sure!!!

SRP supports this statement in the Cambodia Daily--show no character!

CHRAC has 22 members--many are not active, some with no activities, just names. (remember in Cambodia, we have over 2000 NGOs) majority are not active NGOs.
