Opposition leader Sam Rainsy is currently visiting the USA. The goal of his visit is to seek overseas financial and moral support in preparation for the upcoming 2008 general election in Cambodia.

Chea Kim Ly, President of the US branch of the Sam Rainsy Party, said that Sam Rainsy arrived in the US yesterday and he is currently staying in Lowell, Massachusetts, a city which has a large number of SRP supporters.

Chea Kim Ly said that Sam Rainsy’s visit will last 10 days, including his visit to Canada also. Sam Rainsy’s visit is for thanking his overseas supporters who pitched in to help during the recent commune election.

Chea Kim Ly said: "The main goal of party President Sam Rainsy’s visit is to thank (his supporters) because portion of the funding for the commune election which was held 4 months ago, came from overseas supporters, there is also a number of strategies planned for the preparation of the upcoming 2008 general election. Because of his busy schedule, Sam Rainsy will visit Massachusetts, then he will travel to Canada… During this trip, he will not meet with US officials because he is too busy with other works in France and Cambodia…"
