Canberra, Australia (AHN) - The Australian Federal Government has welcomed anti-terrorism laws passed by the Cambodian government. In a joint statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer and Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said the Australian government had provided advice to Cambodian officials on drafting the law.

"This is an important step for Cambodia and the region in the fight against terrorism," Ruddock said. "The law will provide a comprehensive legislative basis for counter-terrorism efforts in Cambodia."

Downer said Australia has been delivering extensive assistance to its south-east Asian allies to help combat terrorism. He said this law was complementary to the counter-terrorism advice the Australian government had been providing these countries.

Cambodia's National Assembly passed the law on June 26 and it was then passed by its Senate on July 10. It now remains to be signed by the King before coming into effect.

Anti-terrorism law? What about anti-corruption law? What's taking them so long to pass corruption law?

Australia has funded the drafting of that law in the first place. Its Attorney General went to Cambodia to check its progress last year.

That law has been enacted very fast thanks to its and other donors'influence and interests.

We have yet to check whether that law is any good for human rights in Cambodia and the government is not abuse it and call Cambodians it doen't like "terrorists" and lock them up under that law. In the Philippines it is feared that such a law might generate into a martial law.

It should be feared that in Cambodia such a law might create "terrorists" who had scarecly existed so far. It should be reminded that after the enactment of the US-sponsored anti-drug law, the previously small drug problem has become some sort of a plague affecting even youths all over the country.

I wish our government enacted the anti-corruption law that fast as well.

How about passing a law against the thousands of Australian sexual terrorists who come to molest and exploit our women and children every year?

After they have passed this law, they should go to check and confiscate all 19 provinces that have YOUN Community or YOUN Association in Cambodia. Because this law we can charge them or label them for being terrorist or harvesting terrorist in Cambodia. Lets do it!!!!!!!
