Cham Prasidh's call for Cambodian-Americans help to push for US law eliminating taxes and quotas on Cambodian imports is met with skepticism

Cambodian-Americans’ reaction to Cham Prasidh’s call

A representative of the Cambodian-American community in the US issued a guarded declaration to the call made by Cham Prasidh, the minister of commerce (MoC), who requested that Cambodian-American communities in the US push their US congressmen and senators to support the law on eliminating taxes on goods imported from Cambodia to the US. The Cambodian-American community representative said that Cambodian-Americans have no difficulties in preparing and sending such petition to their congressmen to ask for their support of such draft law, but only if poor Cambodian people are the true benefactors of such law.

Brian Ben, a Cambodian-American community leader in Long Beach, California – a state which counts more than 100,000 Cambodian-Americans – said that there is no problem if poor Cambodian people really benefit from such action. “Will the benefits go to the large businessmen or will it go to the government which will redistribute them to needy people? This is one issue. For our community, to make copies of such petition and sending them to our local representatives is not a problem, but the most important is: will the benefits really go to Cambodians in general or not?

Cham Prasidh just completed his visit to the US this week, where he was sounding of US congressmen to agree on a law eliminating tax and quota on products and merchandises imported to the US from poor countries in Asia Pacific.

On Friday morning of last week, during a banquet organized the Cambodian ambassador in Washington DC, Cham Prasidh told RFA’s Kessor Raniya about the importance of support letters from Cambodian-Amercian communities. “There are 250,000 Cambodian-Americans in the US, in all 52 states. They voted for current congressmen and senators. They have the rights to write a letter to those who want their votes, telling them that I will vote for you, but I originally came from Cambodia, and Cambodia needs your help, in return, I will help you back if you help me and my original country. I left my country because of various reasons in my original country, now that my country is at peace, my country needs developments, please help. If (Cambodian-Americans) write such letter, it is very useful, because such letter shows that Cambodia is a poor country just like other countries which need self-sufficient means to survive, through commerce and economic development.”

Chea Kim-Ly, a Cambodian-American community activist from Massachusetts, the second largest Cambodian-American community in the US after California, agreed with Brian Ben’s statement. Chea Kim-Ly said: “I believe that Cambodian(-American) people would send such petition to their state congressmen to help obtain such law. But, once the US grants such law, the Cambodian government will need to distribute benefits from this law. Will these benefits actually reach Cambodian people or not? Especially, (will it benefit) Cambodian workers who are being oppressed by foreign companies operating in Cambodia? If the US grants such law, the benefits must be reaped by the Cambodian people first.”

Ms.Kessor Raniya(Siamese or hybrid name?)please slowly consider the following points:
1-Brian Ben (Not Khmer name?) is not all Khmer -US representative,
2-Each US of Khmer heritage origin individual has five senses and needs not for this Brian to speak in each behalf,
3-Kim Ly(is she or he?)is not the Mayor of Lowell. This individual is merely a volunteered element serving opposition political machine against Hun Sen regime, nothing more...Can't be as Khmer-US representative because Khmer US representaivea are in real US Congress,
4-Importantly US has 50 states not 52 unless RFA drew a new map without congressional awareness,
5-Congress consists of 535 elected officials (100 senators and 435 Representatives)that goes the same for Khmer US not everyone sees the same light,
6-Lastly Minister Prasith is, as usual, in attempt to wholesale Anekkakchon to get trade /tax exemption from US commerce. Each vote represents a voice and right of US citizen.Khmer US is US citizen, thus Prasith can't tell them otherwise.

Watch what you report, Ms.Raniya

I heard many problems with Cham Prasit himself.
1-his wife and him went to singapore shopping and have bought a lot of expensives goods and allow Singaporean investors to pay for him.
2-Between 1996-2000, many clothing companies have bought labels from Cham Prasith to put on clothes which are not made in Cambodia. many reports have said that hundred of ready made clothese made in China and vietnam have been shipped into Cambodia just to put label" Made in Cambodia ". Cham Prasit has committed this criminal activities.
3-Many countries around the world have their hands out from business communities. In Cambodia, Hun Sen and Cham Prasit have controled in every aspect of business. His wife have business relationship with Korean company Kingwood ? Where on earth, they allow such minister to do such thing? Conflict of interest?
I am better sleep!!!!

I support the idea of Brian Ben. You are right! the real benefit go the real people is much less. We can see that only 10% per cent reach the needy people.Out of that will go to....who knows?

To 9:48AM!

Cambodia used to be colonized by the France and some Khmer even have French name! For me, I have name that spell differently but pronounced to have a name of the most common American name and my last name is one of special last name I was amazed that even white American have it! It is common sense to have a name such Brian Ben since he live in United States!

Regarding the human senses, there are more than five senses! You do the research and prove me wrong on this! But I can assure you that human have more than 5 senses!

Regarding Chea Kim-Ly (not Kim Ly!), a Cambodian-American community activist from Massachusetts! Who the fuck said she is Mayor of Lowell? It is you 9:48AM! Who said that she is a Mayor of Lowell! Shame on you!

Regarding the 50 states, United States have 50 states but don't forget that U.S also have power over other territories too such as Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Marianas and Guam! I can't blame those people who said that United States has 52 states! Yes...there are Cambodian people lived in Guam, ahahahahhah!

Cham Prasidh (not Prasith!) You even misspell his name all wrong! Cham Prasidh is merely just making a request! He didn't demand any Cambodian-American to do what he said! Duh!

Now regarding the trade situation with Cambodia! From my understanding, It is very importance that Cambodia must have more trade with other countries especially a friendly one because without trade Cambodia would still be in the Stone Age because trade bring more job creation, new products, new ideas, new innovations, new allies, new foreign connections,...and new way of seeing the world! Those countries that have more trade tend to be the strongest and the most advance!

If the trade with U.S can help lift Cambodian people out of poverty and help make Cambodia more democratic country and why not! But if the trade bring only a few benefits for high corrupted officials and Cambodian people still bite the dust...and I say no!

9:48AM! You take things out of context! So much for your logic and good luck to congressman or congresswoman who want your vote!

No way, I am currently living in Lowell, MA. There is no mayor with the name "Chea Kim-Ly)as a mayor in Lowell. Please correct. This is very bad information to be published. And there was a city councilor of Lowell,MA. His name is Rithy Uong. He resigned because he held two job titles(1)City Couoncilor (2)House Master of Lowell High School. So he resigned the position of City councilor.

I am sorry homy,if Hun Sen and his regime still there I will ask my congressman to stay out.

If I back Cham Prasith up ,it seem to be helping and pouring the fuel add on in the fire another meaning I help Hun Sen 's government to kill my brothers and sisters.

I will support all Cambodia's interest when Hun Sen get his neck hang like Sadam Hussein.
