A FORMER police officer on drug and armed robbery charges has been refused bail in a Sydney court after his "informal" extradition from Cambodia last week.

James Anthony McCabe, a former Victorian police officer who also worked for the National Crime Authority, was ordered to stand trial on the charges last October.

His committal, in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court, was held in his absence as he had been living in Cambodia since November 2004.

Today he appeared in the Downing Centre District Court after being flown back from Cambodia last week in response to a request by the Australian government.

Judge Colin Charteris was told no formal extradition treaty existed between the two countries.

The judge refused an application for bail made by McCabe's lawyer, noting the seriousness of the charges.
