Ignazio di Pace, the Italian ambassador, said that Italy wants to open an honorary consulate in Phnom Penh in order to facilitate the relationship between Italy and Cambodia. The Italian ambassador told Uch Borith, the secretary of state of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, during a meeting on 19 July 2007, that because he resides in Bangkok, Thailand, therefore, he asked for an authorization from the government of Cambodia to open an honorary consulate in Phnom Penh again. Italy had a consulate in Cambodia between 1967 and 1975. He added that, in 1992, Italy established diplomatic ties with Cambodia again, but the ambassador resides in Bangkok instead. This led to difficulties in the relationship, therefore, Italy wants to reopen its consulate in Cambodia again. The Italian ambassador said that Italy wants to open an embassy in Cambodia, but because of budget problem in Italy, it has decided to open a consulate first, and in the future, it plans to open an embassy here.
