With the ongoing protest demanding that the Vietnamese government release Monk Tim Sakhorn from jail, a report indicated that a Khmer Kampuchea Krom pagoda was ravaged by fire today.

RFA Vietnamese language service reported that the temple of the Moha Tub pagoda was ravaged by fire at 3:00 AM on Wednesday 15 August 2007. The pagoda is located in Treang province (Soc Trang in Vietnamese) in Kampuchea Krom (current South Vietnam).

Venerable Kim Ren, the abbot of the Moha Tub pagoda, said that the fire was started when one of the 60 candles in the temple (Vihear) fell down.

The extent of the damage on this 400-year-old temple is not known yet, however, a source indicated that almost all the antique Buddha statues in the temple were ravaged by fire.

This is horrible. I guess the lesson to be learned is that becareful with them candles that can easily cause the fire to consume whatever is in its path.

I agree. Many people, especially the nouveau riches spent a lot of dollars to buy big and expensive candles to the pagoda during the Visak Bochea. That a waste of money.
I am a Budhist but I am not a very religious man. I respect all religions.

Do you think the fire caused by candle? It makes no sense. This fire got start around 3:00AM. People were a sleep at that time. Therefore, how can the candle get fire during that time?

This is arson who burned down the temple. This temple is in Kampuchea Krom not in mother land. So who did this? It's 100% is Youn Hanoi burned this temple down to eliminate Khmer identity. Especially to revenge Khmer Krom protest around the world. If they can burn Angkor Wat down, they will do it.
