Cambodia manages to score 3 goals before losing to Kyrgystan 3-4 in a thriller match at the Nehru Cup

Cambodia lose a thriller

NEW DELHI Aug. 19: Young Cambodia showed courage and gumption, while giving a superior Kyrgyzstan a scare before being outpaced by the opponents 3-4 in the third tie of ONGC Nehru Cup tournament at Ambedkar Stadium today.

It was an extremely fast-paced match. Both the teams played an attacking game, probably Cambodia coach Mr Scott O’Donnell thought this to be the best way to tackle the physically superior Kyrgyzstan side.

It was the players from central Asia who drew first blood. In the 12th minute, a powerful right footer by Talant Samsaliev from 25 yards out, beat a diving Cambodian goalkeeper Oum Vaesna to go in. Five minutes later, Kyrgzstan doubled the lead with Bakyt Mamatov heading home a brilliant cross from the right by Davron Askarov. But then the game took an unexpected turn. Cambodia reduced the lead in the 35th minute when Man-of-the match Hok Sotitya scored through a free-kick from the edge of the box. Cambodia levelled the score in the 40th minute through Chan Rithy, while Chin Chum put the team ahead in the 43rd minute, taking advantage of a defensive lapse.
