The authority claimed on Sunday morning that they have a clue on the suspects involved in a car bombing in Mongkol Borey district, Banteay meanchey province.

Lieutenant-colonel Chan Kosal, the Banteay Meanchey province police commissioner, said that the police in cooperation with the military police, identified two suspects who were trying to pull a victim out a 1993-model Toyota Camry car, and they were seen taking pictures after the bomb explosion.

Chan Kosal said: “We mainly suspect the 2 persons who were taking pictures, these people are very strange: they pulled the victim out of the car, they took pictures with their mobile phone. [Could this be a terrorist attack?] No, it’s not there yet. It could involve a hiring case, therefore, (the suspects) were taking pictures to show to their chief.”

This claim was made one day after a car bombing destroyed a white Toyota Camry car, causing a serious injury to both legs of the car owner when this man was driving his car from his house located in Phnom Prasat Village, O’Prasat commune, Mongkol Borey district, Banteay Meanchey province, at 7:30 AM last Saturday.

The police claimed that Chang Seng Thiev, the 39-year-old victim, was sent to a hospital in Phnom Penh, and later was sent to another hospital in Vietnam.

The cause of the car bombing is not known yet at this point, but the authority suspect that this is a revenge case.

Nou Tharong, an official of the CMAC organization who visited the car immediately after the explosion, told RFA that this explosion was caused by a mixture of TNT and a number of other chemicals.

Nou Tharong said: “This is a modified bomb … based on observation, it was detonated with a battery and it was a mixture with explosive. Looking at the debris which bears black smoke marks, TNT was used.”

This is the first time in Cambodia’s northwest that the authority and CMAC officials have seen the use of a TNT bomb exploded by a remote device.

At the end of July, another TNT bomb was also used in an attempt to explode the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship monument located in front of Botum pagoda in Phnom Penh city.
