Even though they are partners in the coalition government, the CPP publicly announced the defection of several hundreds of Funcinpec party members who decided to join the CPP. A CPP official said, on Tuesday, that about 600 Funcinpec party members defected to the CPP during a ceremony held in Pursat province, presided by Suy Sem, the chairman of the working group helping the Pursat province and minister of industry, mining and energy. Ly Thuch, the 2nd vice-chairman of the National Committee for Disaster Management, and himself a recent Funcinpec defector, said that 624 Funcinpec party members have defected to the CPP voluntarily and without any coercion. Ly Thuch said these defectors left Funcinpec because of the split within this party. Nouv Sovathero, Funcinpec spokesman, declined to comment on this issue, saying only that this public declaration could be psychological warfare.

They left FUNCINPEC because they were told they would lose their government jobs if they did not join the CPP, and FUNCINPEC can no longer guarantee those jobs. Questions anyone?
