Flooding in the north and northeastern regions of Cambodia has displaced 11,000 villagers, killing one young girl, officials said Thursday.
Roads are cut off and farms inundated in Preah Vihear, Stung Treng and Ratanakkiri provinces, officials said.
The flooding is due to storms in Thailand and Laos since Aug. 5, and damages are estimated at $1 million, Nhim Vanda, deputy director of the government's Disaster Relief Committee, said.
"We have moved about 9,000 people in Ratanakiri to four highland areas," he said. "In Stung Treng, we evacuated more than 2,000 people to safety."
Authorities are facing food shortages for flood victims, Preah Vihear Governor Preap Tan said.
"Our preliminary report shows that about one thousand families lack food," he said. "Roads are cut off in several areas, but the most important thing is that people need food supplies."

This is bad. When I was over at Phnom Penh, I experience my first flooding at one of Phnom Penh's street. Apparently, the street was constructed too low, so flood water concentrated on it. I learned quickly that the water was not only filthy, but riddled with pathogens from sewage water. I saw kids wading and swimming in the water. My mother n' law and wife was force to wade through the water, above our knees to get to our cars.
Afterward, we had to wash our feet with anti-bacterial soup (I brought from the State) water, and liquid germ killer liquid. Even after all this, their feet itched for 5 minutes or so. Imagine the kids and people who has to wade through this water for hours.
Flooding is a MAJOR ISSUE in Phnom Penh and the rest of Cambodia. When we drove to Kampong Som or Siem Reap, I've notice alot of small ponds and streams were filled with dirt. People don't know that without ponds, streams, lakes and rivers to absorb rain, there will be more and more flooding.
i'm no scientist, but it isn't that because of deforestation?
Yes. You are correct. Deforestation is also a major...actually, a big MAJOR reason for flooding. Trees and vegetations absorb water.
