Two groups of armed men fought with each other in Phnom Penh and caused death on both sides. The gunfight in the middle of the capital took place between one side who is the nephew of Hun Sen’s advisor, and on the other side, the nephew of Mrs. Bun Rany Hun Sen, the Chumteav No. 1 of Hun Sen.

Military police officials indicated that Lieutenant Colonel Reth Nika, the 27-year-old deputy military police of the city of Phnom Penh, is the nephew of Seng Tieng, Hun Sen’s special advisor. He was shot 5 times and killed by the group of Roth Chansonody, a police colonel working at the Ministry of Interior. Roth Chansonody is the son of Kov Samuth, and he is the nephew-in-law of Bun Rany, Hun Sen’s wife, and he was also killed by Reth Nika.

The event took place on Sunday evening along Street No. 178, north of Wat Phnom. Near the Saravoan Decho pagoda, Chey Chomneah commune, Daun Penh district, Phnom Penh city, and it was filled with car chase and shooting just like a Hollywood movie. Eyewitnesses of the event trembled with fear.

A eyewitness said that about 10 bullets were exchanged between both sides against each other at 6:00 PM on 09 September 2007, when Reth Nika was trying to flee out his black Mercedes car during a traffic jam at the incident location. An eyewitness said that 2 armed men among a group of 7 people, got out of a Mitsubishi Pajero SUV which rear-ended Reth Nika’s Mercedes. The two men then chased after the fleeing Reth Nika and shot him 5 times inside the pagoda, hitting him in the head, his right hand, and both of his legs.

Touch Naroth, the Phnom Penh police commissioner, immediately told the newspaper that the police apprehended one of the shooters.

Reth Nika’s body was transported to Wat Langka pagoda, and then taken to his home the next morning. Roth Chansonody was transported to the Calmette Hospital where he later died.

A doctor at the Calmette Hospital said that Roth Cansonody told him before he died that the shooting stems from a dispute about women and not from car accident. A source with the authority also indicated that the two were fighting each others for a long period of time because they were disputing about women at a club. Roth Chansonody was taken to Wat Unalom pagoda and it was guarded by several dozens of police and military police officers inside the pagoda. A few hours later, his body was transported to the Champous Ka’ek pagoda.

People living along Street No. 178 who witnessed the shooting said that, at the incident location, the traffic was jammed. An eyewitness said that about 10 people in a Mitsubishi Pajero SUV rear-ended the Mercedes car three times. An anonymous source said that armed men got out of the Pajero SUV and shot the windows of the Mercedes car three times, then the 3 passengers of the Mercedes got out of the car and fled into the nearby pagoda. The passengers in the Pajero SUV chased them and shot 5 more bullets. After the shooting, 2 men ran back to the Pajero SUV which took off on Norodom Boulevard. However, Roth Chansonody, Bun Rany Hun Sen’s newphew was seriously injured and was transported to the hospital where he died.

Roth Chansonody is the son of Kov Samuth, the brother-in-law of Bun Rany Hun Sen. Kov Samuth was killed in 1996. At that time, Hun Sen shed his tears on TV after Kov Samuth was shot and killed in a restaurant south of the Monument of Independence. Kov Samuth’s killing took place during the start of the dispute between the CPP and the Funcinpec (in 1996). The authority arrested Srun Vong Vannak, the former SRP security chief, and accused him of being involved in the killing of Kov Samuth.

Phnom Penh dwellers are waiting to see how Hun Sen will deal with the two armed gangs, with one side being the nephew of Seng Tieng, his advisor, and the other side, the nephew of Bun Rany Hun Sen. Hun Sen used to warn that if the sons of government officials are shooting each others in the city, and that they form gangs, these officials will be removed from their positions, in particular if such incidents occur in a province or city, the police commissioner in that province or city will also be removed. Now that this shooting took place in the city of Phnom Penh, on Sunday evening, between the nephew of Hun Sen’s advisor and the nephew of Bun Rany, it is not clear how Hun Sen will handle it.

This is good. Let all the devils in Cambodia die so that Cambodia can be at peace. This can be a lesson to Cambodian youths as well. Associating with hun sen will bring gun, power, money and death under 30 years of age. Some may die later, but all with bullets.

It is very sad to see Cambodian men in the position of power to help their country turning their guns on each other over women.

It seems the old habit dies hard after the fall of the Khmer empire. Kings and princes used to slaughter each other over women, and this role model has continued to make its presence felt in this generation as well, to the detriment of their country.

Nothing good will come out of this. One bad guy is dead, another bad guy will replace him. Cambodian youngsters will see it as a cool thing to do. Remember the samurai sword fight, anyone? It is becoming a regular weekend affair for youngsters to settle their dispute over girls.

Don't be sad, those who are stupid enough to do this kind of thing deserve to die. Cambodia will be better off if all the stupid people die and smart people live to lead the country. These two guys had high rank in the military and police. They are in control of hundreds of people. I bet they had bad influences on the people underneath them. Since they die, we have 2 less trouble makers to watch out for. This way we wouldn't have to worry about getting shot when you and your family walking down the street on a sunday evening. These are the bastards in hun sen and bun rany's(a vietnam female)clan. Note: most leaders in Cambodia have vietnamese wife. I understand why.

Let them die. More peace for the people.

I thought was only regular people would have done such things, but people who are supposed to be role models or leaders, I'm speechless.
I guess Cambodia is a wild and wild South East ASia country ruled by uneducated peasants, and that's how they supposed to act.
Why PM Hun Sen stays mum? He must have approved it.

That conflict it reflected to what Mr Hun Sen said that all high officials if let their son or daughters to be gangster he will dismiss their father or mother from the power. and now with this situation what Mr Hun Sen will barks to the people again? if you can not stop the gangster you should step down and it the time that you should let Cambodian love, live with peace justic and harmony in our society.

Why you said only regular people doing that kind of thing? Do you think these high ranking Cambodian/Hanoi agents and their relatives in the high class? You're totally wrong. These people are under class Cambodian peasant and cow keepers who are not educated and now rule Khmer people.

In old day during Lon Nol era, No government son or daughter is doing this kind of evil thing.

WHY THESE HIGH RANKING OFFICIALS' RELATIVES HAVE GUN WHERE ORDINARY PEOPLE WAS PROHIBITED TO OBTAIN GUN? BECAUSE AH HUN SEN DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO REVOLT HIM AND HIS REGIME IF THEY HAVE GUN. NOW PEOPLE SHOULD ARM THEMSELVES TO FIGHT HUN SEN AND HIS REGIME.

Both thought they were tough and could get away with caught with their powerful connections. This is a very common sentiment among the rich and powerful in Cambodia. They are rude and arrogant with lack of respect for others. They both should be punished according to law. But will they do it?
