Hun Sen criticizes a TV education spot produced by the Ministry of Education18 September 2007

Prime minister Hun Sen criticized the broadcast of a short TV education program aimed at pushing people to register their children to go to school, the program was produced by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MOEYS). Hun Sen said that the TV spot discriminates against illiterate people.
Hun Sen made this criticism on 18 September, during the distribution of the “Hun Sen national scholarships” to 500 top students at the Cambodia University for the period of 2007-2010, at the Chaktokmouk conference center.
Hun Sen said that this education TV spot should be changed. “The new spot for the school registration in the past few days, contains a scene where the wife said: ‘Had I known that you are illiterate, I would not marry you.’ Regarding this point, how many people does it affect, (especially) those who are illiterates? Right now, there are (even) a number of company owners who are illiterates, but they can do business. This spot affects people, and wouldn’t women with illiterate husbands be ashamed? Therefore, our goal is to have children register for school, for parents to register their children in schools, but it could affect all those men and women where either the husband or the wife is illiterate.”
This short spot has been broadcasted for almost a week already, its goal is to have those responsible for children to register them in school for the approaching next school year.
Chea Ser, the MOEYS secretary of state, said that his ministry will push its group of experts to correct this scene. He indicated that the words used in this spot, could affect the morale of illiterate people.
According to a MOEYS report, the number of illiterate people in Cambodia amounts to almost 40% out of a population of 14 million.
Rong Chhun, President of the Cambodian Independent Teachers’ Association (CITA), indicated that besides this TV spot, the government should also review the quality of the education of also.
Rong Chhun said: “I believe that each person wants to learn, they want themselves to be knowledgeable, but, because of their social condition, because they are poor, they don’t have the opportunity to go to school often. What is important, is whether the society will provide the opportunity to Cambodian people, to Cambodian children to receive quality education or not? However, currently, the number of people who did not receive education still remains high.”
Rong Chhun indicated that for people who did not receive education in the past until now, the government should pay attention on these issues.
