An official of the National Election Committee (NEC) said that for next year’s general election, the NEC plans to spend $17 million. In an interview on the Apsara TV station (owned by Hun Sen’s daughter), Tep Nytha, NEC secretary-general, said that during next year’s general election, the NEC plans an estimate expense budget of $17 million, and the NEC had already sent this proposal to the government. He said that government experts are currently reviewing this budget request. Regarding the $17 million expense budget, Tep Nytha said that, in comparison to previous election, except for the 1998 election, there is an increase in the budget because of the need to review the voting lists, and the conducting of the extended voting registration, therefore more budget is required to pay the election officials.

Whatever this NEC asks for money from the government, NEC will receive because the NEC decides everything and the voters decide nothing.

After the last elections in 2003, all NEC staff were allowed to import one car without paying tax to government. After next year elections, wait and see what are the gifts from the victory party?
