One Cambodian dead, 12 hospitalized with puffer fish poisoning

Phnom Penh - One Cambodian child was dead and 12 members of two more families were in hospital after they lunched on dried puffer fish, or blow fish, police said Friday. Deputy chief of Takeo province, Soun Thon, said 13-year-old Khieu Channrith died shortly after eating dried puffer fish from neighbouring Vietnam. Takeo lies about 80 kilometres south of the capital.

Channrith's grandfather, both parents and three visiting relatives were in a serious but stable condition in hospital, Thon said, adding that another entire family of six had also been hospitalized the same day, apparently after eating fish from the same shipment.

Despite the fish containing potentially deadly toxins, dried puffer fish is a common snack in Cambodia. Unlike in Japan, where the fish is an expensive delicacy, in Cambodia the meat is usually eaten by poorer families.

Food from Vietnam poisons Cambodian people. All Cambodians should be careful when eating anything prepared by the vietnamese or imported from Vietnam.

I love puffer fish. they have great taste to it. Perhaps, this is because they love to eat little crab, barnacle, or shrimp. They also have extremely tough jaw and teeth to to break through the most crab shell and barnacle. The bad part is sometime the barnacle contains toxin that get accumulated in their blood stream and digesting system. In addition, they also have toxin on their skin, but I think this is their own defense system. So, to be save, I removed the head, skin, digesting organ, and any large blood vessel, and so far, I am still ticking. Another thing is I have seen a few species of them. The one I ate is fairly small and light colored, perhaps the side of a person palm or 1.5 times that. The other specie of puffer is much larger, grayish, and about 40-50 cm long with a round body of about 10-13cm diameter. I have caught a couple of them, and man, you should have seen the job they did on my hooks. I mean they crumble it totally. Plus, they look so cute like a little baby, especially the round black eye that I just can't kill it, hehehe. So, I end up let them go. And that is how much I know about it.

Puffer fish contains deadly toxin known as tetrodotoxin which is more toxic than cyanide!

"The puffer fish is known as the source of the sometimes deadly Japanese fugu delicacy, a dish that can be prepared only by trained and licensed chefs. A slip of the knife that accidentally releases toxin from the fish liver, kidney or ovaries can poison the food, with disastrous consequences.

Diners feel unwell, dizzy and their mouth tingles. Soon, symptoms grow more serious for what has been described as the culinary version of Russian roulette. Diners drop to the ground convulsing and gasping for air. Death soon follows."

True, but the toxin can be wash away.
I don't think you can avoid keeping the toxin from spilling. Furthermore,
there are alway some toxin in most fish (such as mercury). The key to safety is not to consume the toxin beyond the safety level.

Another tip is not to choose old fish. I mean old aged fish because the older they are, the more toxin getting accumulated in their system. Plus, older fish might also carried some other diseases because they have weaker immune system. I usually release the fish back in the water that is larger than the average size.

Don't be foolish mother fucker! The tetrodotoxin toxin will stay in the meat and can't be washed!

Don't even try to compare mercury with tetrodotoxin! The mercury will take sometime to build in the human body to get to the poisonous level!

You know too damn well that all fish have certain amount of mercury whether it is farm raise or wild caught!

This foolish mother fucker doesn’t even know what the hell he is talking about! Just shut the fuck up!

Yeah, but toxin take a long time for it seep through the white meat of the puffer fish. It would be slightly faster if the heart of the puffer fish is still pumping blood, but dead meat is not like an unsaturated sponge.

I tell you when I clean those puffer fish, toxin blood is spill all over from the instant I break its neck, get rid of the organs, and rip out the skin -- BTW the skin is very leathery, not like regular fish skin. You don't scrap it. You have to rip it off as you remove a sock from your feet. Then you wash what you got left in a bucket of water by dipping it and agitate it a little, and voila!

I don't give a fuck any amount of poison in the food! As long as poison come in contact with any thing and people shouldn't be eating it! I am talking this poisonous compound which is more toxic than cyanide!

You know there is poison in the food and you still want to eat and that is your problems not mine!

For those people who have trouble with their relationship and taking this mother fucker advice is the best thing in the world!

Hey dude, if the poison is not washable, then you are right, but this poison is washable.

Anyway, my favorite puffer fish recipe is stir fried with multiple vegetable like asian celery, mushroom, crispy root, onion, bean sprout, and anything that I can find nearby, hehehe, and a pinch of salt, no black soy sauce or fish sauce.

Sometime, I also stir fried it with Julianned ginger and julianned green onion and a pinch of salt.

My sister like grilling it, but I am not thrill about it.

Definitely, I would not eat raw like Japanese. Well, maybe a can just take one small slice or two, but no more than that. I know I will be bored with raw fish taste after that.

Common dude, it is just an accident, they probably have some new and inexperience Ah Khmer-Yuon workers in the plant that is careless and allowed the toxin to contained the products. The thing is we consumed millions of those little suckers, and we only have one tragic. This is still a lot safer than driving in Cambodia.

The Vietcong fishermen control all the seafood trade with AH HUN SEN Vietcong puppet government! Khmer are the consumer of the Vietcong dirty dangerous products! I suggest that the recall system must be established soon before more Khmer people die!

So eat your poison Vietcong bitch!
