Authorities were holding two men Monday after the murder of a deputy chief of military police, officials said.

Col. Reth Nika, 27, was gunned down on a busy Phnom Penh street Sunday evening. He had fled his Mercedes after it was chased by an SUV and became stuck in traffic, Agence France-Presse reported Monday.

Gunman ran after Reth Nika and caught up with him in a pagoda, where they shot him dead, AFP reported.

Two suspects had been arrested and a third man thought to be involved died from injuries sustained during a shootout, Phnom Penh Police Chief Touch Naroth said. Police suspected a personal grudge and were searching for two more suspects, he said.

AFP reported the dead assailant as Rath Sorady, 20, a policeman with the Interior Ministry.

Keo Remy, first vice president of the Human Rights Party, called the shooting a "brutal" example of the "killing anarchy" brought about by weak rule of law.

Chan Saveth, an investigator for the rights group Adhoc, said his group was investigating the shooting.

"a "brutal" example of the "killing anarchy" brought about by weak rule of law." This is the perfect example of Cambodia's current law, anarchy. People aren't afraid to chase and kill other people in plain daylight. Just brutal. No one seems to give a rats ass about the law under Hun Sen. It's kill or be killed. This is how the mafia is run.

I would not say PP is "beautiful city on earth". Have you seen it? There trashes on every curbs/corners/small stalls, etc. Waste management is lacking at an incredible scale!

The society without a sound waste management is rampant with preventable diseases. Because of foreingns influence, Khmer Society just came out of the the Dark Age period into the Hunting/Gathering society. We are not yet at the Modernized standards. It probably takes us 500 more years, or lose the country to BE ruleD by a COMPETENT LEADERSHIPS!

Killing in broad day light shows the absence of the RULE of LAW in Cambodia.

People say: "Like Father Like Son". Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, Chea Sim and other leaders of the ruling CPP used to be soldiers of Pro-Vietcong Khmer Rouge Army. Killing of people were the lessons they have never forgoten from the Jungle University accreditted to HANOI and Bejing top-class University.

It is extremely dangerous as Hun Sen, Heng Samrin, Chea Sim and other leaders of the ruling CPP were graduated from such a University. They remember only the Jungle Laws, The rule of Jungle, the Rule of Guns. So, their sons (new generation of CPP) are doing things like their CPP fathers have been doing. And, Sooner or Later They, too, will kill their own fathers.
